Chapter 1
Forks
I stepped out of the car, glancing up at the warm sun one last time.
"Are you sure you don't want to stay? I could cancel your flight, if you wanted," My mother said.
"If I stay, you won't be happy," I reminded her. The man sitting next to us glanced behind his dark glasses. I gave him my most dangerous smile, and he looked away.
"I'm sure Charlie will love to have you back," she said, and swiftly kissed me on the cheek. "Have a good flight!" She drove away, knocking over an orange cone on the way.
The flight was hot, I guessed the air conditioner broke down. It was five hours until we got there.
As predicted, Charlie was waiting there for me in the airport when we reached Forks.
"It's nice to see you, Bella," he said awkwardly.
I grinned, Charlie was like me in a way. He never liked to say his emotions out loud, it made him uncomfortable.
"Nice to see you too. Mom says hello," I replied.
He smiled, and I followed him to his police cruiser. Charlie was a cop, the chief of police.
The drive back was short. The town Forks with incredibly small.
"Have you been in touch with Jacob lately?" He asked.
"Yeah. He's awesome at scary stories," I smiled, because I knew those "scary stories" were actually true.
"So what have you been doing until I came?" I asked.
"There have been some...killings. All very unexplained. This boy came out to the store at night to get popcorn, next thing he's lying in the in his car eyes open and pale.We don't know what to do about it." It looked like it. he seemed flustered.
That left me pondering. Unexplained killings...found dead....Unmistakable signs of a vampire.
A memory flashed through my head. Jacob and I were walking down the beach last year. Johnathan was my awesome werewolf friend.
"What story do you have today?" I had asked.
He grinned, looking thoughtful. "Vampires," he said smirking.
"Aw, Jake, anything more creative?" I said in a mocking voice.
"This is as creative as it gets! And, like the werewolf story, it's real."
I listened. "I met a vampire once. He was pale and beautiful. His hair was black, his eyes were red, and he was unbelievably fast." He stopped then, glancing at me for effect.
"I only saw him from I distance," he continued. "He was hunting on our land. Sam and Jared spotted him and they chased after him, the rest of the pack following. He ran onto Cullen land, so we couldn't go any further.
"Cullen land?" I asked, startled that they had a last name.
We're not supposed to attack them...We made a deal with them. As long as they didn't come onto La Push, we would leave them alone." He grimaced, then continued.
"They supposedly don't hunt humans, only animals. That would explain their eyes. They have golden yellowish eyes, not red ones. They leave in Forks you know" he added.
Which brought me back to the present.
The person making the killings were not the Cullens.
The vampire killing only came out at night. Like the usual vampire in movies. I grimaced at that. At last the cruiser pulled in to the driveway.
Charlie showed me to my room.
"Do you like it?" He asked.
"It's great, you couldn't have done any better," I assured him. He grinned.
"Well I'll leave you to unpack. I'll start dinner," he said awkwardly.
And that was that. I glanced around at my room. There were blue draping curtains over the windows across my bed, and a desk with a computer. A table stood next to the bed;
an alarm clock was on the table. I stared at the alarm clock. It was 7:00 PM.
I woke early next morning. I had not been able to sleep well, because of the constant rain.
"Bye Dad!" I called. He waved.
It was the middle of the semester. I went to the office.
"Hello, how can I help you?" she said.
"Um, My name is Bella Swan..." I didn't need to say anymore. She understood right away, maybe even understood more than I predicted. She handed me a map of the school and a class schedule.
The first class I went to was English.
I gave my slip to the man named Mr.Mason.
He nodded, gave me my books and directed me to a seat. I got bored. They were teaching everything I already knew.
The next two classes went by quickly. A girl from Biology walked me to lunch. I couldn't remember her name.
And that was when I saw them. They were sitting at the back of the cafeteria with a tray of untouched food, their faces pale and beautiful. Their eyes were darker than gold.
None of them looked the same. I continued to stare. The bronze haired one stared back at me, and I narrowed my eyes. Yes these were the vampires. The Cullens, I assumed. Jake was right. Vampires.
The bronze haired boy narrowed his eyes right back at me, then looked away. I would have to keep my guard up. I didn't want to get killed. I tapped the girl next to be whom I had just remembered her name: Narietta.
"Are those the Cullens?" I asked Narietta.
She nodded quietly. "The bronze haired one is Edward, The little dark haired girl is Alice, The Big blond haired one is Emmett, The Blond haired girl is Rosalie, and the tall blond haired one is Jasper."
I nodded gravely. These were the Cullens, yes.
The bell rang, I got up and left the cafeteria. The next class was biology.
I came in quietly, gracefully maybe. I sat down in the only empty seat: Next to Edward Cullen.
"Shoot," I muttered, inaudible to anyone but the vampire. "I'll have to thank the werewolf for warning me." He stared at me, shocked. I sat as far away from him as I could, shuddering.
"All the signs..." I muttered again.
"You do realize I can hear you, right?" A quiet whisper came from behind me.
My eyes opened wider as I turned around. True enough, he was there, taller than me.
Stay calm, I thought. He's only a vampire. He smirked.
I remembered something then.
"I remember some Cullen dude can read minds," Jacob had said.
"That would explain" I muttered.
His smile was grim. "You're friends with a werewolf?" He asked.
I glared at him. "Yes. What's the problem?"
He jerked up then, probably my scent hit him. I grimaced, then leaned as far as I could off the edge of my chair.
TO BE CONTINUED!
(Authors note: yes, It's kind of boring.)
