Because it really gets under my skin.
Okay, so you go into a bookstore looking for (as many of my subscribers do, I hope) the manga collection. You can generally find anything you're looking for -- shojo, shonen, mecha, mahō shōjo, moé, you name it. But the main thing you'll find upon browsing the manga section in any bookstore is *fanfare! da da da daa da daa daaa!* Yaoi!
Ugh. You don't know how mad it makes me.
I've asked people what their motivation is behind reading yaoi, and they say it's because it's cute. Yeah, I suppose that's true, even if it's not my cup of tea, and even if it gets to the graphic dude-dude sexuality portrayed in FAKE vol. 7.
But the market has been flooded with it. It's making me mad. The manga I typically can't wait to get -- Trigun, Blame!, even silly stuff like Tuxedo Gin! -- we only get a couple of copies of that... because the rest of he manga shipment is yaoi.
I can understand a series or two here and there, but it's taking over manga! The decent manga authors stay far from it -- I haven't seen Clamp so much as refer to it, Yasuhiro Nightow acts like it doesn't exist -- but there it is, big, ugly, and growing. FAKE, But I'm Your Teacher, Because I'm A Boy, Our Kingdom, Man's Best Friend, yuck. Too much. A little is cute.
And if we have so much yaoi because it's cute, WHY do we have NO yuri? I don't mean to sound perverted, but love affairs between girls should be every bit as cute as love affairs between guys, right? It doesn't have to be hentai, but the market is unbalanced.
No. No more. I officially hate yaoi.
You know what bookstores do with books that won't sell or books they have too much stock of? They rip the covers off, send the covers back to the publisher as credit for new books, take what's left, rip it up further, then throw it in the compactor for the betterment of the local landfill. Trust me. I work at Waldenbooks.
I'm the one that got to rip up Poison Cherry Drive... xd
