Illustrator, animator, teacher, and comic artist Fran Krause has touched a collective nerve with his wildly popular web comic series and subsequent book Deep Dark Fears. Here he brings readers more of the creepy, funny, and idiosyncratic fears they love illustrated in comic form–such as the fear that your pets will tell other animals all your embarrassing secrets, or that someone uses your house while you’re not home–as well as two longer comic short-stories about ghosts.
I can totally relate to Fear #14 since even til this day I worry that if I let my arm or leg hang over the bed, that something under the bed would grab me. And Fear #80 is something that was scared of when I was a kid, thinking that the branches scraping against the window was a monster’s long fingers trying to get inside the house. The rest of the fears I couldn’t relate to, but the rest were pretty funny and had me smiling in amusement. Though I thought one of them, Fear #54 didn’t seem like a fear, more like a personal preference of what the person wanted to happen when they were placed in their casket.
The book itself is cute, from front to back with it’s illustration, coloring and the font for the text. Inside of it is a collection of illustrated comics based on people’s irrational fears, which can be funny, spooky or just plain weird. I remember coming across Fran Krause’s Tumblr and that’s how I was introduced to him and his comics. I was pleasantly surprise to find that he had them in a book form. This is the second volume, a follow-up to Deep Dark Fears which I have not yet had the chance to check out for comparison. But if it’s anything like this one, it’ll be just as great.
However, I wish that it was longer because I felt like I went through it too quickly. I hope that somewhere in the future he’ll have a bigger book containing all the fears in it. It may interest people to have it all in one book, especially if he plans to release more of these smaller books. I really can’t find anything to dislike about the book. It’s nicely put together and I enjoyed looking through it.
