Movie Review: The Mummy (2017) |

This isn’t really a review, more like my thoughts on the film. It wasn’t anything special. It had moments where I enjoyed certain scenes, such as the airplane sequence, Ahmanet regenerating her decomposed body and the church. But that’s all because nothing really stood out to me about it.
It felt rushed and patched together because it was trying to do everything at once from horror, to comedy, to action, to world building explanation and not enough of what really matter.
The actors did their best with what they were given, but the characterization, dialogue and plot could have been fleshed out a whole lot more. It’s obvious that they put more attention on building up the universe, like the monster organization than the characters. I get that The Mummy is the first franchise of Dark Universe, but I wish that they focused more on making the film stand alone before trying to shove other information into it.
In the Marvel universe they are able to make it work because they make sure that each film is able to stand on it’s own with great characterization and plot, while subtly adding in a person that works as the connection between them all.
If they’re going to bring together monsters to form a squad that saves people from other monsters than they need to be likable characters, if not than understandable so that viewers would want to root for them.
Did I care for the character that Tom Cruise played, Nick? No. I disliked him actually. Did I care about his best friend. No. His love interest. Definitely not. I didn’t care about any of those characters. Even the villain felt flat. Sofia Boutella as the mummy was great, but it’s not her fault that Princess Ahmanet was dull.
I felt like they could have done a much better job if they really took the time to understand what they were dealing with. If they developed the characters better, they would have given them believable motives and have their actions make senses within the story they were telling us. Was it entertaining? I guess it can be, especially if you suspend your belief because you’re not getting anything mind blowing from it. Is it re-watchable? Meh, to me it’s one and done.
Honesty, just watch the 1999 version of The Mummy and The Mummy Returns instead. It’s a lot more enjoyable and entertaining to watch. I actually care about the main characters, even the minors ones are given some attention. As for the bad guys, especially Imhotep and Anck-Su-Namu they weren’t just evil for the sake of storytelling or for a minor/petty reason. They were fleshed out too (excuse the unattended pun).
The viewers understood their motivation. They would do anything to be together again, even if it meant damning anyone who got in the way, even the world just to accomplish that. And hey, having some sort of supernatural power as part of the deal is even better. Because they didn't just want to be together, but they were also sick of serving the Pharaoh and wanted the freedom to live their life the way they want.
