The media always treats new things, mostly technology related things such as video games as though it’s a virus that will induce health dangers and violent tendencies in people. After all, there have been plenty of media coverage in the past about how video games supposedly cause a person to go on shooting sprees. The media ignores the fact that they were mentally ill, that they had easy access to a weapon, that as a minor the parents should have been monitoring what they watched and played (than again, kids always find ways to be get their hands on things that they know they shouldn't touch or watch -- at that point parents should explain the differences in reality and virtual reality). Instead all the blame goes into a video game that had nothing to do with the crime they committed. The game doesn't make or anyway force someone to do things. It is a choice.
But again, this is nothing new. Older generation always blames the latest thing in entertainment culture for all the wrong things that are going on with the newer generation. It used to be moral panics about comic books, then rock music, computers and of course video games.
It’s like they forget that violence has long existed before any of those things were invented. Humans are capable of many things – good and amazing, but they too can be very evil and destructive.
