Zombie Apocalypse - Baseball Bats |

Anonymous asked: Can I have your opinion on using the bat as a weapon in the apocalypse?
The bat has always been a popular weapon to use in many zombie apocalypse franchises because it’s easy to find, quiet and effective at close range. A well placed swing can knock the zombie on its back, and a follow up swing into the face can end it. However, there’s always a possibility that it will either break or you’re in a situation where there is not enough time or space to swing it. It’s even worst when you’re dealing with a large number of zombies. The effectiveness of the bat is greatly reduced since you cannot kill them in rapid succession. By the time you kill one, you will be fending off more. The main problem with using a bat is range. You have to be close, and there is no room for error. But that’s an issue for nearly all melee weapons. The baseball bat is good to use, but it’s not something that you want to rely on every single time.
There’s also the debate on what kind of bat is best for an apocalypse, wooden or aluminum? It’s hard to say since I’ve haven’t seen anyone put them to an extensive test in apocalyptic scenarios (though Zombie Go Boom - Aluminum vs Wood Baseball Bat is the only one to come close), but we all know that each bat has it’s own pros and cons.
Aluminum bat is light and quick, which makes it easier to carry and swing. The wooden bat is heavier, but has more force behind the swing to cause damage (though that also means it can exhaust someone quicker with each swing). You also have to consider that the force to smash a skull might not necessarily require the mass of the wooden bat. Especially when it’s a popular notion that zombie skulls are mushier. And over time the wood will splinter, break or rot (and it’s more likely to break in cold weather, when the wood is dryer and more brittle), while the aluminum bat would dent or bend, but never break.
Honesty, I think it depends on what kind of threats you’re dealing with in the apocalypse. If it’s zombies, you’re got several versions to consider. If they’re the decayed, falling apart, pop out of the grave type, than any bat would do. The zombies would be more squishy so it’s wouldn’t matter what you use.
For the more lively, tough zombie, that would be more difficult to answer. Some would say the aluminium. The speed would be more important than the weight if they’re able to move faster to attack quicker and still have plenty of energy leftover. But others say that the wooden bat is better because they need a heavier force to cause the most damage after one or two hits.
I say it’s up to the person wielding it to decide what’s best for them, because not everyone has the strength required to swing in a few hits. Someone weaker may want to use the solidness of a wooden bat because it’s mass would aid them in making a heavier impact on the skull. But than again, they may not even have the strength to swing with enough force to cause much damage – no matter what type of bat they use. In which case, they may have to consider using some other kind of melee weapon that better suits them.
A rare few consider modifying the bats. Such as adding nails or barb wire to make it deadly. However, modding the bats – especially the wooden one could do more harm than good since you’re weakening the structure, which in turn will increase it’s chance in breaking much more sooner (even Zombie Go Boom - Spiked Baseball Bat did a test of it).
As for the aluminium bat it’s been suggested that if you drill a small hole (since they’re hollow) and fill the inside with some kind of resin or light weight material it would make it a better weapon. That way the interior of the bat has a shape to it and is less likely to bend or dent. It would still weight less than a wooden bat and be more durable too. Though there were also some suggestion to use a solid alloy steel baseball bat because it’s a stronger metal that you never have to worry about it ever bending or denting. But that would be much more heavier than a wooden bat and requires a lot more effort to carry around and use.
In the end, using a baseball bat in an apocalypse isn’t a terrible idea. It just depends on a couple of things though, such as the person’s wielding it level of strength and the type of zombies they face. If I had to choose one, it would probably be the aluminium bat because I’m more likely to break or splinter a wooden bat (since I would be more focus on killing the zombie than the way I swing or aim it – after all breakage is a result of contacting the target, such as a baseball on the wrong part of the bat). And I may use the idea of filling the aluminium bat with a light material to make it more sturdy as well.
