I seem to be losing interest in reading fanfiction lately, especially those that contain too many OCs (mostly all females). Why? Because just when I think it’ll be a good story to read, it turns into a story about a love triangle, a square, and whatnot.
For example: I was reading about this OC who’s a police officer and while on the job she comes across a crime in progress and gets tangle into a mess with the canon characters. The story starts off really well with the OC stopping crime and slowly getting to know the canon characters. But suddenly the OC’s friends appear without warning and it becomes obvious that they are only there to be pair up with the other canon characters (and to start up trouble). The story had the potential to be great with it’s action and story telling but it turned into a stereotypical petty “romance" story that is focus on all of the OCs relationships.
I’m so disappointed and annoyed. I come across too many stories like this. Why does EVERY OC’s friends have to be paired up with the other canon characters? What ever happen to not instantly getting along? Or just not get along at all? Or just being friends? Or developing a sibling bond? Heck, what if the OCs are already in a relationship and are quite happy with who they’re with?
It’s seems that when the main OC is in a relationship the author feels bad about the other canon characters being single and brings in more OCs just to give them some love. I wouldn’t mind it so much if it wasn’t done in nearly EVERY damn story. It’s annoying and unneeded. For example (TMNT): there’s four main canon characters and it’s guarantee that the OC will happen to have three best friends (or sisters) — that will obviously get paired up with the other single characters. It could have worked just fine if it wasn’t so damn predictable and the “relationships" weren’t so instantaneously.
