There needs to be a way to differentiate blind walkthroughs (and let’s play disguised as walkthroughs) and actual walkthroughs that are meant to be helpful. In the past, whenever someone saw a video with the title of a game and attach to it the word walkthrough, it was always informative and useful. Walkthroughs use to be a thorough demonstration (sometimes with an explanation) of details in each step of a process, in this case of a video game.
Those videos would always help anyone that was having a difficult time getting pass a part. Be it they were struggling to solve a puzzle, they couldn’t defeat a boss, or they were searching for hidden items, maybe they kept getting lost and the map (or there isn’t a map) wasn’t clear enough. Whatever the reason some people prefer video walkthroughs to text walkthroughs because it’s quicker for them or they’re learn better by visual.
That’s why I’m starting to get annoy by videos that call themselves walkthroughs when they really aren’t that. What they’re are, are “Let’s Play” kind of videos. Let’s Play is define as someone, sometimes a group of people that play a video game and they record it (always with commentary that relates to the game, sometimes it’s off topic) in which they share it with the world. It’s mostly done for entertainment purposely.
But there’s also those videos that are video game walkthroughs that do a very poor job at being helpful. They show the player spending an hour of running around, getting lost, getting killed, starting over and whatnot. It’s not very informative or helpful in any way. They are useless, and waste the viewers’ time because they don’t explain anything. They don’t explain what or why their strategy worked against bosses/enemies, why they choose that character class/weapons/powers, they don’t make it clear in where to go to get an item/to do a mission, and whatnot.
In short, it’s annoying that people don’t classify what their videos are correctly. If it’s a serious walkthrough in which it’s goal is to help people with their own play through of the game then say so. If it’s a let’s play video then say so, don’t disguise it as a walkthrough. And those that say they’re a walkthrough but aren’t, please stop and change it to let’s play because that’s what it really is. It just makes it easier for everyone to find what they want to find and keeps things organize.
