I have no experience in using liquid eyeliners because I like using pencil eyeliners a lot more. I never saw the need to bother trying them out, but it never hurts to gain experience in using other tools of the trade. So to start off I decided to use a cheap liquid eyeliner. Why? Because I don’t want to spend money on something I may not like using at all. Besides why buy an expensive eyeliner just to practice with it and experiment looks? That’s just wasteful.
So I headed to Dollar Tree and found the L.A. Colors Liquid Eyeliner in black. Maybe it’s the artist in me but I had no trouble in applying it. It went on so very smoothly and I only needed one layer of coat. I just did a single stroke from the inner to the outer corner of the eye. As soon as I was done putting that one layer and got to the corner of the eye, it was dry. The package doesn’t say anything about it drying quickly but I like that it does. It cuts down on my time of putting makeup on.
The applicator is a brush tip and it’s thin. From other reviews I heard that the tip tends to fray easily but for me it was sharp. My guess is that after a couple of uses it will turn that way? Anyway, on the packaging it says that it’s formulated for long lasting wear and that it’s smudge/smear proof. To test that out, I decided to wear it for a couple of hours, 6 hours max.
It’s hot because it’s summer and that should be a good time as any to find out if it will hold true. Surprising enough it still looks great! I see no smudging or flaking going on. I even took one of my fingers and gently ran it across the eyeliner. It still held up and looks the same as I did the first time I had put it on. For only a couple of hours that’s pretty good and I’m sure it would have last even longer if I kept it on.
As for taking it off, I thought it would give me a hard time but it came off easily. There’s no staining or leftover residue of the eyeliner. I didn’t even need makeup remover, just old fashion water and soap in this case, face wash.
Overall, for a liquid eyeliner that cost a dollar I like it. It’s not super amazing as other liquid eyeliners that I’ve heard about but it does do a decent job. I can see where some people may have some issues with this but it all depends on how you use it. I definitely suggest that you apply your power foundation/eye shadow to your lids before putting the eyeliner on. That’s what I did and I only needed one layer of coat.
I also didn’t put any eye primer on but if you fear it coming off or smudging or whatnot, then you probably should. But otherwise you should test the eyeliner first in different ways so that you know it’s limits. Lastly, I don’t recommend this for people who like to rub or touch their eyes constantly. I was gentle when I ran my finger across the eyeliner and it didn’t come off or mess it up. But before I started taking it off I did it again, only this time I press hard and it was coming off really quickly.
From what I’ve heard about this product is that it’s not always consistent. Some people put it on and it starts to flake after a couple of hours. For others it last all day. Some have a hard time putting it on but others find it pretty easily to use. But what do you expect from something that costs a dollar? It’s not perfect but it all depends in how you use it and if you got a good batch. To me, it’s good to practice and test out looks without wasting your good stuff.
