Non-Comedogenic Chapsticks And Lip Balms |

Is there a chapstick or a lip balm that doesn’t cause acne? Sometimes I like to put a little bit on before going to bed, especially in the winter, to help moisturize my lips while I sleep. Because it’s very nice to have smooth and soft lips.
However, I’ve noticed that the chapsticks I’ve been using have caused me to breakout. I originally thought it was just hormonal changes, stress, diet, etc. But I’ve only made the connection now because I ran out of it and so far my skin has been clear.
It was strange that out of my whole face I was getting small pimples on my chin, and in the area between the lip and the skin. I even double checked to see if it was the chapsticks causing the acne by not using any for two weeks. No breakouts, but very dry lips though. When I started using it again the acne reappeared.
I did some research and learned that I need to look for chapsticks or lip balms that are non-comedogenic. Non-comedogenic means it has been specifically formulated so that it does not block or clog pores which results in blackheads and pimples. Those with oily skin or prone to acne will benefit most from non-comedogenic products.
Commercially available brands tend to be comedogenic, having an ingredient (such as coconut oil, cocoa butter, lanolin, isopropyl myristate, isopropyl palmitate and so on) in them that is capable of clogging pores. So it’s important to check the ingredients to know which products to avoid. I want to share this knowledge with others who might not know that. And for those that have the same problem as I when it comes to choosing the right chapsticks and lip balms. Source: ACNE.ORG does a better job at explaining it and listing what ingredients are comedogenic.
After a bit of researching I compile a list of chapsticks and lip balms that are supposedly non-comedogenic or less likely to break you out (even if they do contain one or two comedogenic ingredients in them). I encourage you all to do your own research on this though, because this isn’t very extensive and everyone’s skin has different levels of sensitivity or allergy to certain ingredients. So what might’ve worked well for me, might not work for you or for someone else.

Also, surprising enough for some people Vaseline (or petroleum jelly and sometimes known as petrolatum) is actually classified as non-comedogenic. It works by creating a protective barrier over the skin to seal in moisture, but since petroleum jelly is a water-repellent and not water-soluble, it makes it hard for the skin to breathe.
To put it simply, when your lips are chapped it’s best to put on a moisturizing lip ointment first and then petroleum on top. It will act as a seal and lock in all of the hydration. Otherwise, only use petroleum jelly by itself if your lips are already soft and smooth. For more information on that go HERE.
Notes:
[1] - Burt’s Bee Beeswax Lip Balm doesn’t work for me. [2] - Carmex didn’t do anything for me either. It felt nice when I first put it on, but my lips stayed chapped and my acne didn’t improve at all. [3] - I’ve tried eos and that also didn’t work for me. It contains Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, and Shea Butter, which are mildly comedogenic and can be a problem if formulated with other comedogenic ingredients. This explains why I still get breakouts whenever I used any of the other eos lip balms. [4] - I got gifted a pack of Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1 from my sister. It contained the original, mint and mango scented lip balms. They didn’t work for me. It was very oily (especially in the summer it goes everywhere) and that made my acne worst. [5] - I tried Nivea A Kiss of Smoothness and it was nice on my lips, but it was still causing me to breakout.
Update:
I found my chapstick!! It’s works amazingly well for me because my lips have stay super soft and smooth. Even better is that I haven’t had any acne appearing on my chin or lip line in 10 months.
I’m so f**king impressed because it wasn’t even on my radar. I just grabbed it because I needed to put on something with SPF. It’s Hawaiian Tropic Tropical Lip Balm Sunscreen SPF 45
It’s lightweight and non-waxy, but also thick enough to protect your lips from the sun with broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection. It’s made with aloe vera, cocoa butter, and vitamins A, C and E. It stays in place, water resistant (for up to 80 minutes – it’s definitely long-lasting) and cruelty-free. The last time I checked it’s also recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation for daily use.
