Am I the only one who’s getting slightly annoyed by people saying DmC: Devil May Cry is Devil May Cry 5?
By now, everyone should be aware that DmC isn’t DMC5. Nor is it a prequel (saying it is implies that it's connected to the original when it's not). It’s a reboot. It does not continue the original Devil May Cry series at all. DmC is its own series and it’s developed by Ninja Theory and published by Capcom.
You don’t need to play the old games to understand what’s going on in DmC. That’s what a reboot is, it’s a retelling of the story. Reboots can happen to anything, from television shows, cartoons, comics, video games and movies. When something is rebooted, it discards much or even all previous continuity in the series and start anew with fresh ideas. A perfect and recent example of a series getting a reboot is the Spider-man films.
They are coming out with a new Spider-man movie, The Amazing Spider-man. This movie has all new cast, different plot, different villains and has nothing to do with the previous Spider-man movies. Again, that’s what a reboot is.
In DmC it details the life of Dante in a parallel and fictitious universe, completely separate from the other games in the Devil May Cry series. So it’s understandable that this Dante is completely different from the Dante fans originally know of. So please, stop misleading people into thinking it’s DMC5 when it’s not. Doing that will only cause unnecessary confusion, especially when (and if) the REAL DMC5 comes out.
