If you’ve been following the Legend of Korra then you’re aware of who Asami Sato is. Her character hasn’t been develop as much as the others, but we do know that she’s pretty and a nice wealthy girl. It’s too soon for me decide if I like her or not but something about her seems off to me. I feel like there’s a whole lot more to her and that got me thinking. What if she’s a Equalist?
It wouldn’t be far-fetched if she is. Now, some of you might ask what information do I have to back-up that theory?
Well, how is a group of oppressed second class citizens that are likely poor nonbenders, getting all these motorcycles and various vehicles? It’s even stated that “not everyone can afford satomobiles as they are expensive” and yet the Equalists have them. How are they getting them?
It would make sense that Amon would have a wealthy supporter to help fund their movement. That very supporter could be Hiroshi Sato because he seems like the perfect candidate for that position. He’s rich and makes those vehicles. It would be easily for him to leave out information in the books about who purchase what. No one would really know where the money and the vehicles would be going to.
When the Equalist motorcyclists first appeared, you’ll notice that the scenes were focus on a particular one. A female motorcyclist who was very good at riding and pulling tricks on it. She also happen to be the one that fought Korra.
Asami is known for being “an expert driver and isn’t afraid to mix it up on the racetrack”. They purposely focus on that Equalist rider for a reason and I wouldn’t be surprise if she is Asami. It’s likely that there might be a flashback to that very scene to reveal that the rider was her. Also Asami is also known for having “the best self-defense training money can buy”. They never specify what kind of training she got, such as what style of fighting but that proves that she isn’t a helpless girl.
Asami told Mako that she too “lost her mother when she was young”.
We are never told how she lost her mother, but if it involves benders, that would be motive for her and her father to join the Equalists. Sure, not every non-bender that lost someone to benders becomes an Equalist, but it could be one of the reasons to side with them.
All in all, I would love for her to be an Equalists. But that wouldn’t necessarily mean she’s an “evil” person if she turns out to be one. It would actually make her character interesting and it would allow the viewers to see the side of a non-bender who supports the Equalists. She could very well be following the same role Zuko was, a bad guy who turn to the side of good.
This is only speculation and I’m not saying that Asami must be an Equalist but it’s a strong possibility that she is one…or at least involve in some way. I’ve tried to come up for reasons why she might not be one but the argument for it isn’t as strong. Such as…
Some say that Asami can’t be an Equalist because she seems to be such a Pro-Bending fan.
The key word here is “seems to be”, just because she says she’s a fan and watches their matches doesn’t mean she’s being honest about it. Being undercover, a spy, is all about playing a role and doing your homework.
Some say that she can’t be an Equalist because when she first bump into Mako it was an accident, that it wasn’t done on purpose. Actually, people CAN fake accidents. If you say they can’t, then explain that to scammers who fake accidents to get insurance money. Some of them get away with it and some don’t. For all we know there could have been someone following Mako, who then gave her a signal to go and hit him.
