In my short time as a beta reader and I’ve check over a couple of stories but I haven’t had good experience doing it. The reason for that is because there’s a lack of communication between me and the writer. It always seems to be one-sided.
I’m human being and it would be nice to get some interaction/information in order for me to be a good beta reader for them. After all, I’m not a mind reader or a robot. I wouldn’t automatically know what it is that the writer needs my help on (besides the basic grammar and spelling check).
It would be very nice if they specify what it is that they want me to look over. Do they want me to check for characterization, punctuation, grammar, plot, canon elements, or something else? Do they want me to do all that? It’s helps to know because they could have had other beta readers, that excel in those areas check their story already. If that’s true, then it would’ve save me time and I would’ve been focus more on what really needed my attention.
My whole point is that if you’re going to send your story to a beta reader, please be clear in your message on what you’re asking them to look for. If you aren’t sure your characters are speaking like they would canon wise, then let your beta reader know. If you aren’t sure your timeline works, ask your beta to help you check. If you aren’t sure that your love scenes are steamy enough, ask your beta’s opinion.
So please, be specific on what troubles you about your story and what you are looking for, it’ll make the beta’s job easier and save them (and yourself) time.
