I love my characters and as I write them, they come together nicely. Their personalities are unique, interesting and complicated just like in reality how people are. But when my characters are first introduce they seem pretty simple and basic (like you can figure out what they are all about/seem predictable) however, the further you read into the novel it changes. They aren’t as simple as one thinks, they’re complex and put up a front but once they get to know people (and the readers get to know them), those people realize that.
I want to take a moment to write about characters because some people start their stories with a plot idea. Others start with a character in mind. For me sometimes I come up with a plot first and other times I think of the main characters. For this novel what came to my mind first was my main character. This novel is about her, and if it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t have a novel in the first place. Her personality, her past, her background…everything about her is what started my story and it was her that gave birth to a plot. The only thing I did was give birth to her and nurture her into a realistic and believable person in her fictional world.
After that, everything started to fall into place.
So point is, take the time to develop your characters and your plot. Once you do just make sure to have an outline for your novel so that you avoid writer’s block.
