I have three theories but over time I narrow it down to one, which is more likely to be true given the hints in the show.
1. At first I thought it was that he was telling Rick that Lori was pregnant but that’s a bit too soon for that and for other reasons too. Oh, and yes you can detect someone is pregnant by blood tests. All someone has to do is look for any irregularity in the blood and being that he’s looking for anything like the virus, he would notice that the levels are off. If anything is off about the blood, scientist and doctors would do further tests to figure out why.
2. It could be that he told Rick that he saw Shane attack/trying to rape Lori. You know, like he review the tape/video from the cameras because he wanted to make sure he could trust them.
But being that the second season started I don’t think it’s that because Rick would have confronted Shane about it by now. Or Lori, asking why she didn’t say anything to him about Shane doing that to her. Heck, he would have by now told Lori that Dr. Jenner told him she’s pregnant.
3. To me, what is most likely for Dr. Jenner to tell Rick is this…
That they are all already infected. That it doesn’t just take a bite or scratch from a zombie to turn them but just dying. Like a heart attack/natural death or a gun shot (if they didn’t blow their brains out). He did said that once he check their blood that there was “nothing new” about their blood.
The more I think about it I believe that my third theory is true. Because in the end Rick is speaking into the walkie talkie to Morgan saying, “I met a scientist. He told me something. He told me..” and we never got to hear what it was. So it sounds like big news, information that isn’t personal but instead important for people to know.
But not everyone should know yet (like the people in the group… especially Andrea) because they’ll freak and might blow their brains out. After all, they’ll think that there’s nothing for them to believe in/hope for knowing that either way they become a zombie when they die (without being bitten or scratch) unless they finish themselves off with a head shot.
It makes a lot of sense why Dr. Jenner gave up. He lost his wife and the only thing that was pushing him to continue was her dying wish. But once his lab/progress of creating a cure was destroy there was no point to keep going. It would also explain why the rest of the people in the CDC committed suicide. Because they knew that they would become one of the undead.
Plus, being that there isn’t a cure and who knows how long that would take to figure out, they had a hard decision to make. To live on in fear, knowing that they could die any day. Everyone is like a walking time bomb and like Dr. Jenner mention…this virus is a human extinction event or something like that.
So they could died by a natural way and still become one of the undead, or that they could be attacked by a zombies (like a bite) or attacked by other survivors which could lead to their deaths and again become one of them, or become zombie food. Basically, they would struggle to survive, to hide and to keep going, only to know that even in a normal death they can’t escape it.
So to them, the best way to end their troubles is to end it themselves because it’s the only thing that they have power over.
Well then, that’s what I think Dr. Jenner said to Rick. Anyone else agrees? Or have other theories about what he said to Rick?
