Why I like it:
I like Falling Skies and what got me interested in it was that it’s a science fiction show about post-apocalyptic band of survivors, fighting against alien invaders. Now, what got me hook on it is that it’s unique. It’s not just about aliens coming to Earth and destroying everything. Or even about the humans fighting back and overcoming it. No, there’s more to it, a lot more and it gets people thinking. It’s smart. It’s a show that makes you think.
Unlike other shows, it doesn’t get much into the back-story with what happen before and with the characters. It’s a mystery but we do pick up on the clues about it. Each time we do it’s a step closer to understanding and getting emotionally connected with the characters and their situation. Plus, it makes sense that it’s focus on the characters, on their fight for survival because they don’t have time to think about the past. They have to keep moving forward, to think about the next day or else they’ll become capture and/or annihilated.
Theories:
Anyway, I have a couple of theories about the aliens. So for those that have yet to watch the show I’m giving you a heads up to stop reading this. I don’t want to spoil any one’s enjoyment of it.
1. One of my theories is that the Harness kids eventually become Skitters. There are several clues that suggest that this is a possibility. The “harness” is a genetically engineered organism that transforms the kids into skitters. Since adolescents are still growing and their physical and genetic structures are still pliant, they’re more amenable to transgenic metamorphosis. Hence the reason why the Skitters go after those below the ages of 20 and kill the adults.
a. When they rescue Ricky, his father told the Doctor (before he perform the surgery to remove the harness to be aware of it) that Ricky has Cystic fibrosis (a common recessive genetic disease which affects the entire body, causing progressive disability and often early death). They were surprise to learn that Ricky was better, that the harness had cured him.
That was the first sign that the harness didn’t just control but improves and changes them. When Ricky woke up we learned that he has no memory of his father or his life before being taken. Yet, Ben instantly recognizes Tom, his brothers and who he is. It’s might be because Ricky was taken earlier on and the longer he was harness the more of a change he went through. While Ben wasn’t harness for as long as Ricky was and he was still able to retain his memories?
If not, maybe it has to do with that the Skitter they were connected to was killed before they removed the harnessses? Or that there was no living Skitter in their vicinity, whereas there was in Ricky’s case? It’s hard to pin point what effects the harnessed kids once their harness is removed.
But whatever it is, it’s apparent that in some way a change will accur whether or not any of those affects make a difference. Like Hal pointed out to his father, Ben did changed even though he has his memories in tack. Hal said, his once bratty, smart, little brother is different. He’s not exactly like a grown-up, but more like a different kid.
b. Ben has shown that he’s capable of running easily without breaking a sweat and doing 102 push-ups. Before he was nerdy and not active.
c. Ricky makes a comment over his father’s fresh grave that suggest something… “Killing’s in their nature,” then clarifies for Ben, “Humans.” Drawing a careful distinction, he continues, “We would never kill one of our own.”
It suggest that he doesn’t consider the harnessed kids, them, humans anymore or that they are like the Skitters now. We also notice that the Skitters don’t carry weapons on themselves which backs up with what Ricky is saying. That they don’t use violence against their own kind. But we do see them commanding and using the Mechs to handle it and enforce whatever their plans are. And the only killing I’ve seen so far by a Skitter’s own hands is with Doctor Harris (so it’s in their nature to be able to kill though).
d. Plus when Hal went to get Ben. We got a peek into how the Skitters treat the harness kids. They sleep together, like what my friend says, “the way a mother hen would sleep with her eggs.”
There just seems to be more to the story behind the harness and why they need the kids as slaves and so on. After all, if they want slaves and if they are so advance they could have just created a different kind of Mechs for that job. But no, they have that harness especially created to enslave them and doing whatever it’s doing to them.
2. Another thing I wonder about as well is the Mechs. In one of the episodes it was pointed out that the Mechs are bipedal and why would they be if the Skitters are multi-legged? Wouldn’t they be design to look like them? If we humans were creating Mechs of our own we would make them in our image not as something else.
It’s a good question and one of the ideas that was put forward was that the Skitters created the Mechs with a bipedal design is to give them a psychological edge over the humans.
a. It’s a possible answer. Another is maybe they logically created the Mechs to be bipedal so that they can move around in human-constructed areas better. Or just maybe they have creatures on their planet that are bipedal just as we have creatures on Earth that resemble the multi-legged Skitters, such as: spiders and octopi.
And they just model the Mechs as one of those creatures on their planet that closely resembles the humans more, in order for it to adjust better to our environment. We may not know why anytime soon but it’s something to wonder about.
b. We also have yet to know if the Mechs are powered armor or armored fighting suits. If they are armored suits then it’s pretty evident that the Mechs weren’t meant for Skitters to operate inside. Which brings up the question…is there another alien race?
3. If the Mechs are in fact suits and being piloted, who’s inside of it?
I doubt it’s being piloted by harnessed kids because they were working long before the aliens invaded Earth. Sure it’s been hinted that the Skitters will use them as soldiers, so that it’ll be nearly impossible for the resistance to attack them. But they won’t put them in Mechs to do so. It would defeat the purpose of “making it impossible” for humans to kill their kids when they don’t see or know they are inside of it.
Besides, is there a possibility that Skitters are slaves themselves? Are they being control by humanoid aliens. Maybe not, if they were then they too would be wearing harnesses or wouldn’t have control of the Mechs (which they could have use to fight against their captors). Or better yet, did the Skitters captured another alien race and is using them and their Mechs as their slaves?
This is just speculation since we don’t have much information on the Mechs but to me something just seems off. There’s a bigger piece to a puzzle that we have yet to discover and whatever it is, it would reveal something deeper then we thought.
EDIT: (SPOILER) Recently I learned that a new Falling Skies clip was previewed at Comic-Con, revealing that our survivors will soon get an eyeful of an old friend…and a new one.
The final clip revealed a new alien. Tom and Hal are hiding in a house. The occupant who is hiding them has a visitor and lets the visitor know that she’s alone. She looks through the door peephole, and – we see that it’s Karen (Hal’s girlfriend who was captured by the Skitters). Tom restrains Hal from going after her. They take another look through the peephole, and something they haven’t seen before looks in. They jump back, but then watch Karen and the new alien walk away. It’s bipedal like the Mechs and has two arms. It’s skinny and tall, and it’s head is shaped a little like a classic Roswell alien.
So my theory about another alien race involve is true. Now the question is what part do they take in the invasion. Are they slaves themselves? Or are they the real enemy behind the invasion? Whatever it is…we still don’t know why? Why invade Earth? What are they after?
