"There are plenty of stylish classy ads in the world, but tonight we're going to ignore them. Our Ad Of The Week is the closest the industry comes to just walking up and punching us in the face. It's The Shouty Ad." — Will Anderson, The Gruen Transfer, 2008 ep07
The most annoying thing in commercials EVER is when they are super loud. Just picture this, the TV show you're watching is quite, so you turn up the volume to hear everything better and not miss a word. Then the second the commercials come on you get deafened by how damned loud they are, and you simply mute the damn thing until the show comes back on. Or you scramble for the remote control to lower the volume.
I get that it's done on purpose so that people pay more attention. Even more so when they leave to the kitchen or bathroom and it's loud so that they can hear it from those areas.
But honesty I still don't give a s**t on what they are selling. Sure I turn my head to the television when it's loud but that's only to mute that s**t and then, I go back to doing whatever I was doing. It just makes me hate commercials and what they are selling even more. Really, I don't know what they are thinking by doing that. It's doing the opposite and making me pay LESS attention when they're muted cause I'm pissed that they're so loud.
Anyway, it's terribly annoying and I've heard that there's the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation, or CALM which was legislation introduced by the US Senator Roger Wicker, on June 18, 2008. It requires the Federal Communications Commission to regulate the audio of TV commercials from being broadcast at louder sound volumes than the TV program material they accompany. The bill passed on September 29, 2010. The bill requires the use of technology to ensure that commercials will be played at the same volume as the program. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will begin enforcing this bill within a year. It was signed into law by the President Barack Obama on December 15, 2010 as Public Law 111-311.
I can't wait until this starts going into affect. So far I haven't notice a change but I guess it's going to take a year, the end of this year for us to see it completely done.
