Bashing is a term meaning to hit or assault or to criticize (another) harshly, accusatorially, and threateningly. The kind of bashing that I see a lot is when it comes to bashing fictional characters (sometimes real people) and/or bashing certain fandoms, in particular some of those animes, video games, tv shows, books and so on. It's understandable that people have different opinions, however it is not polite or necessary to voice your opinion in a negative and harmful way. Bashing is distasteful, juvenile, and disrespectful because when one does it, they disregarding everything by focusing only on the negative. Or they hate on something without a real reason. For example: When a fanfiction writer dislikes a specific character in their story they turn that fictional character into an exaggerated version of themselves or if not, they change that character's personality into something terrible. I've see many that bash Sakura (from the anime/manga called Naruto) over something that happened ages ago. She was a little kid at the time and little kids do stupid things. I know I disliked her for a while, but as the anime/manga continued she grew in depth, becoming a mature, level-headed young adult that better herself physically, mentally and emotionally. She's not perfect (no one is), but her flaws make her human -- make her real.
They best kind of stories are those that show the character's growth throughout it. But it's so disappointing when writers focus on what they hate about the character. They refuse to view the character as a being and that makes their own story suffer for it. Even till this day, people still bash on her over that and never move on. It's unjustly to hate on her just for that reason and it's petty.
Also, if writers have an original characters they want to add to a story and want to break up a canon pairing (or want to change the pairing for another to be possible) they like to bash. Such as bashing on Ron Weasley (Harry Potter) so that Hermione loses interest in him just so she can get together with Harry. That's horrible because what kind of message does that send? That two people can't be together without someone being a possessive b*****d or turned into a idiot? Or that in order for two people to "fall in love" or be "together" is that they have to hate on the same person to spite them? Is it that hard to write fanfiction without bashing? Everyone should treat all character the same and keep them in character just as the original author intended. Writing the characters that you hate as one-dimensional exaggeration is a huge turn-off. The original creator of these characters intended them to possess much more depth than that. It's not just character bashing that exists but also bashing on fandom. I've seen many that hate on things without a reason or if they do, their reason is a petty one. For example: I've heard and seen some people immediately regard Dragon Ball Z (an anime/manga) as idiotic, childish and stupid. Just because they saw a picture of a guy with bulging muscles, big spiky hair and a vicious smirk on his face and so they automatically label it as "stupid". Some even bash fandoms without actually ever watching (or reading or playing) it or if they do watch it, they never finish an episode or they only watch a few and declare it stupid without actually giving it a decent chance. Point is, if you don't like something, that's fine, feel free to say so, but you don't have to go into rude details as to why or worst, give petty reasons behind your 'hate' of it. So please, try to state your opinion in a calm and respectable fashion. There is a difference between an opinion and a harmful remark.
