When I first got into Supernatural, what interest me was the most about it was the genre of it. I love horror and things dealing with the supernatural and action/adventure. I so badly wanted to watch something that wasn't a reality TV show or sitcom, or soap opera. Instead I wanted something different, something that wasn't connected to life or dealing with teenagers in school. Or Beverly Hills or cheerleaders, or whatever else that's too dramatic or boring me. Those things didn't allowed me to escape my reality because they were too closely related and/or make me compare mines with theirs and wishing for something similar that's not possible. At the time I was struggling with dark inner thoughts about my life and I just wanted something to enjoy. I wanted an escape that was just for me. Something that would allow me to not think about my life, instead get sucked into the story and the fantasy-like lives of the characters while still being able to connect because of how realistic it is. So that's when I started to watch the show, I got hooked with the story, Sam Winchester and Dean Winchester's lives. I admit that the handsome appearance of the main character appeal to me also. Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles are two of the most handsome men I've ever seen on screen. But other shows have attractive leading men, too. However, before I never had any interest in male actors, not even having a favorite or a favorite female actress. But as I got to know the actors as themselves and as they played the characters I started to realize how great they are. They make them come to life, their emotions, their personality, their movement and speech. They become the characters and they make people forget that they are acting. To me, they really stand out, Dean with his devil-may-cry attitude and loyally following his father without question while Sam and his more sensitive personality just wants to have a normal life and do what he wants to do. They're so different and yet they balance one another so much. It's especially noticeable in season 6 when Sam doesn't have soul and we realize how much we missed the old Sam. And all the things they go through, no matter what it is, they do it together. They don't let anyone or anything stand in their way and I love how in season 5 it showed through in the end how Dean would never say yes to Michael just because he's the vessel and that it's his fate, his purpose. Even Sam, as long as he had his brother he would fight and stay strong because of him. They only have each other and that bond is beautiful and inspiring. They would die for one another and go thorough whatever blockades to save them and/or bring them back to life if there's a way. It becomes apparent to us viewers that, the theme of the show is family. They do what they have to do but in the end it's family and it's what keeps them going. It's what inspires them to help the innocent and hunt monsters because even though they can't have a normal life once they've been exposes to the supernatural, they want to prevent other families, other people from ever experiencing the same thing they went through. Speaking of hunting demons, and other figures of the paranormal, they make it realistic. After all, just like Eric Kripke said, "It's the idea that horror can happen in your own backyard. How many viewers have to worry about the vampire in the gothic castle?" We can really see the difference. The thought of being in abandon home in the middle of no where with something evil inside it, compared to a haunted item that was bought from a flea market or auction and being carried into your own home and causing torment to the owners. It makes one paranoid because we'll feel like it's a possibility. That makes it a much more enjoyable show than something farfetched. It has us eyeing the shadows and dark corners of our homes, feeling like we're being watched or something. Now that's exciting. I honesty love everything about the show. The actors, the creators, the makeup artists, the prop people, etc. Each and everyone of them worked hard to make sure each detail is right on the dot and come to life. This show has been such a huge part of my life I'm going to be sad once it ends and I know it will someday. It's a scary thought because I honesty do not know what I'll do or watch once it's over. I don't think I'll be able to find another show that will match up to it's greatness. One thing I do know is that I will be sharing (if I haven't already) this show with my friends, family and one day my kids and their grand kids. It's themes are universal and timeless, rich in emotion, inspiring and uplifting. They might think of me as the ‘crazy old cat lady’ then, but I will not care. And then, after having been captivated by the first episodes, they will keep asking me to borrow all seasons all the time. That's what Supernatural means to me.
