Practical every zombie nerd has their own survival plan in case an outbreak ever happens in their neighborhood. Some even prepare in advance. They keep tools and supplies for an emergency like that somewhere stored in their homes. But I've read a couple of people's plans and majority of them are highly unrealistic. Sure zombies aren't real or possible but it's just for fun. However, if they were to be real I doubt that many would already have guns somewhere in their homes or be able to get it easily. Honesty, many of these plans seem to contain guns, even those rare and expensive kinds which the public doesn't have access to. It would be understandable if they're a solider or a marine or a hunter or they have a family member that's one and has/collects weapons. But there are many other flaws in their plans too, like staying in a Walmart. It seems like an ideal place to make a fortress but it's not exactly a realistic and smart one though. It's more likely that it's been looted for supplies already or maybe it's been destroyed as well. Plus it can't really make a good fortress if it's has glass doors that can easily be shattered by a hundred or more dead pounding on it. My money is on it being raided though and from what I've seen of natural disasters situation, people like to loot. Besides all that I want to share my realistic contingency plan. I live in the city, so it's not going to be easy. At first I thought about getting out as fast as possible but that's going to be difficult with all the chaos and my folks. So my best option is to stay where I am with my family and barricade ourselves using whatever we can. The goal would be to wait it out until they starve to death or rot. It's not going to be that hard because I live in a three tenant building. My family is the only tenants there and were on the second floor. There are two entrances really, the front and the back. So if I need to escape I have one option open. I do have a back up though in case I'm surrounded by them on all sides, (but I doubt I would happen because the backyard is fenced up and I can climb over my neighbors fences to get away) it is the roof. It's not the greatest back up escape option but I would only use if there's no choice. The houses here are close together and it might be possible to jump onto the other roofs to get away. Anyway, the first floor windows I don't have to worry about because they're far off the ground, the zombies won't be able to reach unless they got themselves chairs to use. The windows in the back also far off the ground and they have bars on them. But there is one window that concerns me so to make sure I would certainly barricade that one well. Oh, at first I thought about destroying the two stair cases but that's impossible and dangerous. Why? Because behind one of the staircases it leads to the basements so it's not possible, the noise will attract more of them to the location if I even tried and/or I might injury myself in the process. Again, I thought about it but I discarded the idea quickly because of those reasons and it would cut me off from my two exits, which would trap me. Once the building is secure the next step would be to gather any tools that can be used as a weapon, like shovels, crowbars. Then I would filled all the apartment's bathtubs, sinks with water and all the buckets and pans. I would also set up seran wrap on my roof which would be rigged to catch dew and rainwater that would drip into empty buckets. This idea would depend on the weather though and the season. So I'll have to be smart on the usage of the water I have saved. After that I gather all my food. I'm sure I would still have electricity and gas working so I'd cook the food that will spoil and save the non-perishable for later. I would certainly spilt the food into portions so I can make it last as long as possible. So I'll be eating a meal once a day which isn't so bad and I'll take some vitamins to give me the nutrient I'm missing. Once my food starts running low I will have to raid the market near me or if there's nothing there I can hit up the two corner stores which are pretty close by. It might not be much but that should be enough to last a month or two if it's ration well. I can't forget about gathering matches, lighters, batteries and candles too. The electricity will go out at some point and it will get pretty dark. Really dark actually, because the only thing that's keeping my neighborhood from being creepy are the streetlights. And it'll be terrifying to hear zombies but not see them without giving out your position to them. Next time I get myself some night vision binoculars. Of course I can't forget to make sure I have a bug out bag, a bag filled with supplies to insure my survival. I would keep it stocked so that way if I have no choice but to abandon my home I have it ready to grab. Once outside my first mission would probably be to head to the little police station and hope someone left some weapons and ammo behind. Then I would raid for food if I don't have some already in my bag. But honesty, after that I don't know what to do. I haven't planned it out after that because it's hard to plan when you don't know all the key elements. For example: the weather. It'll be harder to get around without making so much noise if you have a car (even more so if you're in the city. I'm sure there will be many cars on the streets abandon and/or floods or snow...depending on where you are though) or if there's so much snow. Hell, it'll be a bit dangerous because you don't know if you end up stepping on a snow buried zombie. Or maybe you'll end up running into other survivors (as for knowing if they are trustworthy and/or aren't crazy that's unknown until it's too late). I was thinking of heading north but I'm not so sure that's a good idea. Winter and the coldness would probably make the dead last longer because it's slowing down the rotting progress. But if it was in the North Pole...they're turn into icicles, still alive but immobile, I think. While the heat/summer would break down their rotting cells quicker. Well, that's my plan. It's not perfect but it's better than winging it on the go or half-assed ones. Plans can change when new elements are added to it. So it'll probably be best to plan it out as much as a person can and change it whenever new stuff pop up, for example the type of zombies you're dealing with. No one will have a chance in hell if the zombies are like the Resident Evil or Left 4 Dead or even 28 Days Later/Weeks Later ones. Running and climbing are not my strong suits. -_-' I much rather have the slow walking/stumbling zombies like the Romero movies than the mutants and/or fast ones.
