It's perfectly understandable when author's have them at the start and end of their story. But some of them do it wrong. Wrong, to the point that it's so annoying and we want to roll up newspapers to hit them with it.
I don't like it when I'm reading a story to find that in the middle of it, the author interrupts the story to say something like, (A/N: Awww! He's so cute when he does things like that!) or (A/N: OMG! I can't believe I kill him off!). They just annoy me because when I'm all into the story and come across one of those my mood dies. I can't enjoy or be sucked into a story when an author interrupts a story like that. It's completely unnecessary. If they really need to say something they should use footnotes. It doesn't break the flow of the story and makes it look cleaner too.
Another thing that bothers me too, is when a chapter is a author's note. I get all disappointed to find one instead of a new chapter. I understand that the writer wants to let their readers know what's going on but there are other ways to do that. Such as leaving a note in their profile, at the top explaining whatever it is they want their readers to know. Or even going to the last chapter of the story and adding another author's note at the top. So this way, new writers will see it and along with any old readers who decide to go back and read the story over again or to just check the story. Heck, if the writer has a lot of time they can even send out emails or something to their readers if it's possible.
But mostly my focus is the author's note as a chapter in the middle of the story. I don't understand why the author doesn't delete it and than post the new chapter in it's place. Instead they leave it there and continue on with the story. I just find that a waste because it looks unprofessional and it also breaks the flow of the story. It's like hitting a brick wall in the middle of no where. There's no reason for it to be there when the story continues. XD
Besides, it's also against the rules to have a author's note as a chapter.
And last of all, those author's notes that are longer than the story. It's a little insulting to read an author's note that's four or two paragraphs long and the story itself in that chapter is just a paragraph, sometimes it's barely a paragraph. It just shows us readers that the author doesn't care enough to spend a few more minutes adding more to the story.
A good example would be a drabble, sure it's suppose to be a 100 words but don't you think it's a bit disappointing to read a chapter that's only two sentences (and I don't mean those run-on eithers) and the author's note is five sentences -- a paragraph?
So yeah, that's my little rant on author's notes done badly. lol
