Zalthom, ruler of the Silver Sea, swam through the deepest, darkest parts thereof, protecting the creatures that dwelled within it… Aside from the ones he ate. Eons ago, Zalthom created the merfolk, whom he called his children. From the waist up, they closely resembled those of the human race, if one could overlook their dramatically pale skin and bony figure. From the waist down, however, they-c-
looked more like the entity that had created them, with extremely long, furry tails that could be brown, black, gray, or even white. Tails that split three ways at the fin.
He gave to their merking a special scepter, with three sharp prongs, capable of great magic. This he would use to defend his people in times of trouble, and would protect with his life.
They lived in almost-perfect peace -c-
their coral city. The peace was interrupted every once in a while as they engaged in war with their neighbors, the sharks, who lived in a city of stone, but usually they were on good terms with each other.
These merfolk knew nothing of the surface, for they had lived all their lives on the floor of the Silver Sea. They believed that the water continued forever upwards, and that the souls of -c-
dxxd merfolk were allowed to swim upward on and on and on, through the Eternal Waters. If one committed a great sin, or failed in their duties to Zalthom before one died, then one would not be permitted to swim upward, and would be forced to remain at the spot in which they had died, swimming forever in circles.
It has been years since the sharks and the merfolk have been at war, and all is -c-
peaceful, all is quiet.
But the merfolk have other, less friendly neighbors. The Seryms, small, shriveled creatures with beady red eyes and fangs of epic proportions, these things seem to thrive on evil, and have magical abilities that none know the limit of, though they rarely use said magic.
Until one fateful day.
Things were perfectly normal; the Time Keepers sang out from time to time -c-
From the Time Keepers' Tower, informing the citizens of the passage of heartbeats. Members of the Coral City Guard Corps (CCGC) swam through the city, ready to protect its people. The Time Keepers were mermaids who counted their heartbeats to track the passage of time, specially trained to moderate their heartbeat so that it matches that of the other Time Keepers. The CCGC was made up of young -c-
mermen, heads shaven for more speed in the water, trained to fight and protect the Coral City.
Merfolk went about their lives, chatting and playing, working and swimming. And then came the attack. The gates exploded, allowing a sea of Seryms to flow into the city, k'lling merfolk right and left. Panic raged through the city, citizens trying to get away in time.
It is now a little while after -c-
the attack. A few survivors managed to escape to a well-stocked cave several hundred feet away from the city, and are now hiding within, wondering what will become of them. They believe that the Merking has perished, and with that belief comes a horrible hopelessness. What will happen to them? Will the race of mer be wiped out completely? It is for us to decide. -d-
bic: He floated in the entrance to the cave, his long white tail gently swishing back and forth. His head was shaven, though it possessed a bit of whitish stubble, and he clutched in one hand a sharpened whalebone spear. He'd been floating there for quite some time, his strange, pale-gray eyes peering out into the gloom of the ocean, through which he could see quite well. He was guarding the few-c
survivors that were all who were left of the once-great Coral City, determined to protect them with his life. He would not fail in his duty to Zalthom.
As a member of the CCGC, he had taken a vow when he'd joined them that he would never wxd, not so long as he was amongst their ranks, and that he would guard the City with all that he was. Rover was anxious, though his stoic countenance didn't -c-
show it. Anxious, and nervous, and oh-so-afraid. If they perished, who would carry out Zalthom's will? Who would ensure that his children continued to grace the waters? No, they had to live. Their duty to their creator and their father demanded it. They had to continue his legacy. -d-
