The time has come for her to leave. To disappear yet again. People were beginning to suspect her, and the same excuse she had been using for the last 10 years would no longer hold. They were beginning to ask questions. Questions she could not, and would not answer. Questions that would eventually expose her... should she stay.
Glancing down at the peacefully sleeping man, a soft smile graces her lips as she gently leans forward to kiss his forehead. Touching her lips to his skin, she could not help but note the slowly receding hair line, and the soft lines that had began to grace his once smooth skin. Straightening, she raises a slender pale finger to her own face, feeling the soft, flawless quality of it that she had long ago grown accustom to. That she had long ago learned to despise.
Peering down once again at the peaceful visage, she finds herself entertaining the same idea she did each time it came to this. Each time she had to leave, the same thought would surface. Would give her hope and tempt her. Each time she would fight it, and each time it would rip out another piece of her as it left. Oh how she wanted to give in...to stop the fighting and the temptation. To stop the need. The sadness. The loneliness. How she wanted to stop it all... but she couldn't. Wouldn't. Not like this. To condemn another to a fate such as the one she suffered would be cruel and unjust. Even if it ended up hurting them when she left. She knew that one day they would once again find love. Once again find someone who will make them happy. Someone who will make them forget her.
And so could she. If only for a while before she had to leave again. At least she would be happy. At least she wouldn't be alone. At least she could pretend...even if it was only for a while. But no more. She will make sure of it. It was time to stop this game she had been playing for the last century or so. It was time to end it.
Some would call her a masochist. Some would claim she was merely crazy. Some would even dare to say she was both. And they would be right. But no more. She had reached her limit... she could no longer go on as she had. It was time to end it... once and for all.
Casting one last look at the sleeping figure, unaware to all that is going on in his surroundings...she smiles. Raising it to her chest, one last word is softly spoken before she plunges it through her heart. There is a moment of silence. Of stillness before suddenly, she vanishes... leaving behind nothing but a hasily carved wooden stake.
