Chapter 1
“Eglantine!” Soren yelled out as she was snatched by a set of talons. Soren speeded down off the branch. Why did this have to happen now??, he thought as he soared faster through the winds. Eglantine cried out as the mysterious owl clenched to her feathers firmly. Soren had to save her. He was her older brother. He had to protect her. Suddenly the creature went yeep. Its feathers and wings became stiff. It went racing down to the earth but Eglantine was still in his cold talons. “Eglantine!” Soren repeated as he flapped his wings faster. All in a blink of an eye, two shadows gripped the small Barn owl. No, not another! He compressed his jaws. Gylfie struggled to fly next to Soren. “What’s wrong?” She asked nervously as Twilight and Digger joined them. “Eglantine!” Soren replied as the little elf owl shot her head at the two shadows. “Eglantine!” Everyone repeated. They exploded at the two creatures. “Stop!” Boron said as he zipped in front of the owls. “These two mean no harm.” The two shadows landed on a branch. Boron sighed. “They are working with us.”
Chapter 2 “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you guys earlier.” Boron said as he sipped up his milk berry tea. Their black silky feathers glided to the floor one by one. Oh no…they can’t be…Soren thought. Crows?? They flopped their way across the floor as snake maids came to scoop up their left over feathers. “Hii!” One of the crows said. This one had a squeaky voice and was almost as small as Gylfie. “I’m Metten.” “Eh…Hello.” Everyone said one by one. The next crow stood tall. “HELLO!” She nearly screamed out. Soren’s ears nearly fainted. The crow greeted the group nicely with her talons. “I am Juanavanahuana.” Soren nearly fainted again. It was First Light. The bright sun reflected on the hollows, the moss. Everyone was asleep and snoring soundly, their feathers tucked in. Madam Plonk sung. The snake maids awoke. But Soren thought. Thought about everything. Where was Ezylryb? Who was the mysterious owl? And who were these crows and why are they helping us? Soren was too tired. He tucked in his wings, closed his eye lids, and waited for First Night.
Chapter 3
“Keep up the good work.” Poot said as the owls dropped the burning coals into the silver bucket. Soren glided over Martin as he searched the trees and fires for burning coals. But Soren could not keep from thinking about Ezylryb and the crows. He had been thinking about it all night. He took focus again and looked down. But there was nobody, nothing on the ground except the trees of fires. Soren look around and started to rush. “Where is Martin? Did I lose track of him?? Oh no…” He mumbled nervously. His feathers started to strike up. “Soren, don’t lose focus. Martin already finished getting a coal. And, don’t worry too much about Ezylryb.” Poot said as he flew next to Soren. Soren flew his head towards Poot. “Oh, sorry. Okay.” But he was still worried. Where was his mentor?
Chapter 4
“Soren! Soren! Wake up!” Gylfie said as she shook Soren. “Huh…huh…what’s wrong?” Soren yawned. “St. Aggie’s is attacking!” “St. Aggie’s is attacking??” Soren repeated. “You can just enjoy a cup of milk berry tea.” Boron said and smiled. “What?! Why can’t we go out an fight?!” Twilight yelled as he watched Metten and Juanavanahuanna use the golden battle claws. “You aren’t experienced yet.” Boron replied. “We killed a bob cat!” “A bob cat? Really?” Boron replied sarcastically. “I can’t believe it! Why won’t he let us use battle claws yet??” Twilight complained. Soren watched the guardians of the Ga’Hoole Tree defend their home. He noticed there was an owl just gliding in the middle. Soren squinted. No…it couldn’t be…He squinted harder. 3 talons were attached to the owl’s feathers. Soren zoomed at his face. He had a squint that seemed as if it were permanent on one eye. It was…it was Ezylryb!
