The summer of 2006, my friends, B, S, and I took Biology at CTY. At first, I was doubtful of the significance of the class but after I took it, I had a greater understanding of Biology. The class got me more prepared for Life Science in 7th grade. Now that I think back, if I hadn’t taken the class over the summer, I would have missed out on the frog dissection because I would have been too scared to cut the poor frog. I am proud of myself and thankful for taking the class because it got me more interested in science. At CTY, we had to dissect three things. They were sheep brain, cow eyeball, and squid. At first I was terrified to touch the sheep brain. The sheep brain smelled horrible on top of that, and the whole class had to take a break from the fumes. After a while, I got over the smelled and concentrated on the brain more. I noticed the wrinkles and dents in the brain. I also noticed a sheep’s brain is narrower than a humans' brain because our head sizes are different. I learned a lot of interesting things by dissecting the sheep brain. The practice I got from CTY got me prepared for the frog dissection in the spring. I wasn’t scared but excited because I was prepared for the dissection and the smell. I could identify the frog’s liver, heart, lungs and other major organs at first glance. I had confidence and wanted to learn and explore as much as I could. Because of CTY, I have a better understanding of science. I am more interested of how my body works and the functions of my organs. Thanks to CTY, I already knew the basics of Life Science. I was able to ask my teacher more in depth questions and widen my knowledge. CTY helped my knowledge of Biology and Life Science and that had an significant impact on my interest in science.
