Inventors Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1876. Thomas Edison invented the light bulb in 1876. The Wright Brothers invented the airplane in 1903 and Henry For produced the Model T. Out of all these wonderful inventions that contributed to society I think the light bulb is the most important invention. I think the light bulb is most important because I use it everyday! I have to turn on the lights when I brush my teeth and I walk through hallways in school with lights on the ceiling. I don’t think that I could live without the light bulb because then my world would be dark.
Exploited Factory Workers Labor unions helped workers get more rights in their jobs. The labor unions were so effective than individuals because if a worker asked for more money they would get fired. After they get fired a new worker would come in to take their jobs. Labor unions worked because there were more people in the protest. If everyone in the factory was in the protest then the boss has to agree because he could fire all the people. That way workers wouldn’t work long hours and get little money.
Isolating America After the Great War America tried to end all foreign affairs. This was called isolation. We were cautious about getting involved in foreign affairs because we were afraid that we would get pulled into another world war. We knew if we were Europe affairs ties will eventually form again and another war would arise.
A Helping Hand for Europe After WWII, the United States came up with a plan to help Europe. A plan we know as the Marshall Plan. This plan was to give Europe financial help because the war has left Europe in ruins. I think this plan was a smart scheme and it was a good use of America’s funds. The funds helped a lot of European countries get better. It also help them not to get into Communism.
Fighting A Cold War After WWII, the United States and the Soviet Union were in the war known as the Cold War. This war was between these two countries but there was no fighting between them. While the US tried to contain communism, the Soviet Union tried to spread communism to other countries. Although we did not fight the USSR in a battle, we did fight in other wars that were about communism like the Korean war. Both countries has the atomic bomb as a weapon but we have never used it against each other. The US ultimately won the Cold War because eventually the USSR could not pay for it’s military weapons. I do not think it was worth the time and money to send on this war. The war was 50 years long and we spent a lot of money just so that we are better than the USSR. I think the thrill of competition got to the US
Kids at Work During the early 1900, many children were working all day in factories. Child labor was one of the targets of activists. I think that it it is wrong of factory owners to hire children and make them work long hours and very little pay. Children who don’t get a proper education will suffer later in life. They would also miss their childhood of playing. If they work for long hours without breaks they might damage their eyes because usually the places did not have lights and they could get a bad back from the chairs. A Tax of Voters The 24th Amendment stated that poll taxes for elections were illegal. Poll taxes were originally used to prevent African Americans from voting. Most African Americans are poor and they don’t have the money to pay the poll taxes. Because of that they weren’t allowed to vote. African Americans had other laws that prevented them to vote. There was the Grandfather Clause, which meant if your grandfather couldn’t vote then neither can you. Since African Americans were just granted the opportunity to vote their grandfather had no chance to vote back then. There was also a Literacy Test. This test was given to everyone but usually the white people’s tests was easier while the African Americans had very had ones.
Racing for Space During the Cold War, the US and the USSR were in a race to have better technology than the other. This race was later called the Space Race. Both countries wanted to be able to go into a place where no man has ever gone, space. The US government thought that the Space race was very important because we have been containing communism and the USSR has been spreading it. It was pretty even until the Space Race. This was the first time were one country can win a race that pretty much help win the war. This way we can say that we have the latest technology.
Firing the General President Truman fired General Douglas MacArthur, who wanted the Korean War into China. Although, I feel that you should always speck your mind it probably wasn’t smart of him to argue in public. I think that he should not have gotten fired if he argued to him about the Korean War in Truman’s office. Although, I think he shouldn’t of gotten fired if he had the argument in his office I do think that he should have gotten fired if he publicly disagreed with him and he did.
Fines for Voting Susan B. Anthony broke the law by voting when it was illegal for women to vote. For this “crime” she was on trial, and found guilty. Since she was guilty she was fined $100. I think that Anthony just wanted everyone to know that she will vote even if she has to go on trial. I think that it was important for her to make a difference but I don’t think that I would have the guts to brake the law to vote.
