I am a Forgotten. You're probably asking yourself 'What is a Forgotten?' and I have an answer for you. This answer, however, isn't short and simple. It's actually very long and complex but the easiest way to explain is this:
The leaves crunched under my feet as I made my way to the meeting grounds. Two others are with me as we make our way through the golden red trees. The time is nearing.
The male of the pair behind me trots to keep up, beings about 4 or 5, while the female easily walks with swiftness and grace, being about 23 or 24. I never looked back to make sure they were following. I didn't need to. The crunching of the dry leaves told me how many people were around me and where they were at. It was that simple.
As we progressed on the hidden path, a simple tug on my pants made me slow. It was the male. "Excuse me miss, but you never told us where we are going."
I smiled genlty as I stopped walking and I knelt to his level. Cupping his cheek, I said, "I didn't, did I?"
He shook his head in my palm and I met his blue gaze. Such sweet eyes. I met the hazel gaze of the female as she stood over her son. Her gaze was slightly hardened but it was still soft, for the boy's sake. She placed a hand on his black hair as she moved a black strand of hair out of her face. I sighed.
"Sit," I said gently. "I'll explain."
The pair did, the boy in the woman's lap. I leaned against a tree as I looked up through the remaining leaves to the orange sky. Dusk was settling.
"Where I am taking you is the place of the Forgotten," I began as I sat at the base of the tree, "and there, you'll have a home."
"The Forgotten?" the woman asked.
I closed my eyes and nodded, resting my head on the tree. "Yes. We are called the Forgotten for a reason though. Many of us are forgotten but not in the way you would expect.
"The leader of the Forgotten was the first Forgotten and he is much older than you and I but he looks about my age. His name is Silverthroat and for what reason, he has told no one why."
I open my eyes as I paused, looking up at the sky. Sighing, I continued. "The Forgotten are those who are of the past, the future, and the present. It's dificult to explain what that means but we are all of different times, different places, and different...stills, to say.
"We live off the land and aid others in help. This forest we are in now is for the Forgotten for the time being. Until Silverthroat decides, we stay here. We never know when we change homes but we have changed only twice during my time as a Forgotten."
"How long is that?" the boy asked.
"Ben," his mother snapped.
I held a hand up. "It's OK," I said. I met his gaze. "Years. So long that I don't keep track of the years anymore. Only to know the day."
"When did you become a Forgotten?" Ben piped.
I was stumped. "To be honest, I don't remember the exact day. All I remeber is becoming one. I think I was one of the first ten to become a Forgotten."
"Wow."
I smiled. "The Forgotten travel a lot, many sent out to find food or to find jobs to support our group, our family. As a scout for the Forgotten, I'm trained as a Warrior, Guardian, and Traveller. These terms you'll learn through time. With these skills, I can leave the Forgotten's forest for a surtain amount of time to look for different things. At the moment, what I was sent to do was to protect you and bring you to become on of us."
"Is that all Forgotten do? Look for new blood?"
I met the woman's glare and smiled gently. "No, Anne. That's not what we Forgotten do. We look for knowledge."
