Sasuke is a Gennin along with Naruto Uzumaki and Sakura Haruno on Kakashi's Team 7. Along with his brother Itachi, are the only two known remining survivors of the legendary Uchiha clan. Sasuke grew up in the shadow of his older brother, Itachi, who was acknowledged as a prodigy because he graduated at the top of his Academy class at age 7, mastered the Sharingan by age 8, became a Chunin at age 10, and an ANBU squad leader at the age of 13. The Uchiha clan took great pride and interest in Itachi and viewed him as a genius whose work would further strengthen the bonds between the village and the clan. In particular, Sasuke's father took an active interest in Itachi. Itachi, on the other hand, was rather ambivalent and full of oddly conflicting undercurrents, acknowledging Sasuke by taking interest in his progress as a ninja when even their father did not, but spending little quality time with Sasuke. Even after Sasuke enrolled in the Ninja Academy, he still was unable to escape Itachi's shadow. Despite consistently scoring at the head of every class, Sasuke failed to receive any recognition from his father, who defined Sasuke's success only in terms of his older brother. Itachi acknowledged the rivalry Sasuke felt, telling him, "We are unique siblings. I am the barrier you must overcome, so you and I will continue to exist together."
Itachi's relationship with his father deteriorated further when Itachi was questioned by other members of the Uchiha clan regarding the death and suicide note of his best friend, Shisui. As Itachi's behavior became increasingly bizarre, Sasuke's father, on a whim and partly due to Itachi's growing distance, decided to spend time with Sasuke. He taught him the Great Fireball Technique, a common family jutsu. Sasuke (age 8 at the time) eventually succeeded in performing the jutsu in front of his father, surprising him. At that moment, Sasuke finally received his father's recognition; the Uchiha clan considered the ability to perform fire jutsu as proof that one had become an adult. Sasuke's father told him that he could now proudly wear the clan's emblem on his back. More forebodingly, Sasuke also received a stern warning not to follow in Itachi's footsteps.
Shortly thereafter, Itachi massacred every member of the Uchiha clan, sparing only Sasuke. Itachi said that Sasuke was not even worth killing. In addition, Itachi told him "You've always wanted to surpass me. That's why I'm going to let you live." Itachi also revealed to Sasuke where the secret meeting place of the Uchiha was hidden and suggested that Sasuke go there to learn what the true history and purpose of the Sharingan is.
Sasuke collapsed, and awakened in the Hidden Leaf Village hospital to overhear villagers gossiping about the destruction of his clan. He escaped the hospital and wandered the village, remembering happy times with his murdered family and finally collapsing into tears as he reached the spot where his parents were killed. He then traveled to the Nakano shrine and found the secret of the Sharingan that Itachi promised him. Whatever he read there only seemed to harden his heart, and from that point forward, Sasuke's life was dedicated to vengeance against his brother.
Sasuke's desire to kill his brother weakened, however, as time went by because of the new bonds he had formed with Naruto, Sakura, and Kakashi. Despite his outward attitudes, Sasuke cared for his teammates, and always jumped in the way to save them when they were in trouble. He even had an outburst when Sakura and Naruto were in trouble against Gaara; he said that he never wanted to see his friends get hurt again.
During stage 2 of the Chuunin exams, Orochimaru placed a cursed seal on Sasuke, causing him to gain a new, evil power. Through much pain, and help from Kakashi after the stage 3 preliminaries of the Chuunin Exam, Sasuke was able to shut off the cursed seal from being activated until his fight with Gaara. The cursed seal appeared again, but for a short time.
When Sasuke met his brother Itachi after several years, Sasuke tried to kill him. Sasuke, though, was still no match and was easily beaten. When Sasuke found out that Itachi came to the Hidden Leaf Village for Naruto, and not for him, Sasuke's rage began to increase. Combined with the fact that Sasuke couldn't understand why Itachi came for Naruto, and the fact that he was still very weak compared to his brother, Sasuke stood up to fight Naruto.
The fight began but was halted prematurely by Kakashi. Shortly thereafter, the angered Sasuke was approached by Orochimaru's Sound Four ninja to invite him to come to Orochimaru for more power. Eventually Sasuke agreed and he left with them. Naruto, Shikamaru, Neji, Chouji, and Kiba set off to bring Sasuke back. At the end it was Sasuke against Naruto. Naruto tried his best to convince Sasuke to come back and not to go to Orochimaru, but was simply ignored. Sasuke said that he needs to brake his bonds with the Hidden Leaf Village so he can become stronger to defeat Itachi. Naruto wouldn't take that for an answer and fought with Sasuke. The fight went to the point of Sasuke unlocking a level two Cursed Seal and Naruto unlocking some of the Nine-Tailed Fox's power.
The fight had been going on for a while, and at this point, the two rivals clashed in a final display of power, as Naruto attacked with a one-tailed demon fox-powered Rasengan, and Sasuke with a level two Cursed Seal of Heaven-powered Chidori. Upon impact, a massive black dome of energy forms around the two. Sasuke hesitates, striking Naruto with the back of his hand instead of the One Thousand Birds, and sparing his life, as he realizes that killing Naruto to gain the Mangekyo Sharingan would be exactly what Itachi wanted. He chooses to leave Naruto unconscious but alive on the ground, thus giving up his chance to gain the Mangekyo Sharingan and proving that he is indeed not like his brother and that Naruto is, ultimately, the person most important to him. In the aftermath Kakashi finds Naruto - hanging on to Sasuke's old headband (which Naruto has managed to scratch as his final act before losing consciousness) and returns him to the Leaf Village for medical treatment. Sasuke, on the other hand, descends to the darkness, heading for Orochimaru, and in his mind resolving (to Itachi): "I will not be your puppet! I will gain power in my own way! I will surpass you in my own way!".
