Miss Maybelle

I was walking down Adams Street on a beautiful October afternoon when I noticed something about Miss Maybelle. And, honestly, I thought it was the funniest thing. You see, I could have sworn that, for but a moment, she had two shadows. Absurd, right? Of course. I laughed it off. A trick of the eye. They were funny things, eyes. And light? It was a funny thing too.

The next day, I saw Miss Maybelle again. I tipped my hat to her and said, “Good day.” And she nodded. But I couldn’t help myself. I watched. I wanted to see if the trick would happen again. Just one shadow, though. And therefore, I thought, it truly must have surely been a trick. I laughed again. But as I made my way ‘round the corner I thought I saw something out of the corner of my eye. A silhouette. Just briefly. The silhouette of Miss Maybelle, waving at me.

You know how eyes can be. And this I consoled myself with. At least, I tried to. But the whole matter left me with a faint unease that I could not shake. I went home. Had dinner. A couple of drinks. Went to bed. And the next day, I went to work. And on my way home I looked to see if I might see Miss Maybelle. I did not.

And for some reason, there arose in me a kind of relief. Such an inappropriate thing to feel, I thought. And then, as I approached that corner from the day prior, I felt my heart pick up speed. Why was I so unsettled? Yet, I could not deny that I was. I went anyway, encountering nothing out of sorts. I arrived at home. Had dinner. A couple of drinks. Went to bed. The next day, I went to work. And on my way home I looked to see if I might see Miss Maybelle.

And I did. I tipped my hat and said, “Good day.” And she nodded. I couldn’t help myself. I watched. Just one shadow again. Eventually I came to the corner. I rounded it. Nothing out of sorts. I went home. Had dinner. A couple of drinks. Went to bed. The next day, I went to work. And on my way home I looked to see if I might see Miss Maybelle. And I did. I tipped my hat and said, “Good day.” And she nodded.

And so it was that this continued for nearly two weeks. So normal had everything become that the whole strangeness had slipped from my mind. And during the first week of November, I went to work. And on my way home I looked to see if I might see Miss Maybelle. I did. And I tipped my hat and I said, “Good day.” And she nodded. And then I stumbled, for her shadow waved at me. Miss Maybelle gasped and asked if I was well. I reassured her that I was fine.

My gaze was fixed upon the shadow that had waved. But it waved no more. It followed her when she walked away. It matched her every movement, in fact. But I know what I saw. I know it! I adjusted my coat, replaced my hat back atop my head, and continued. I remembered, then, my experience with the corner. And I dreaded it. Indeed, I was quite shaken by what I had just seen.

But nothing happened when I rounded the corner. And I went home. I had dinner. Three drinks, this time. Went to bed. My sleep was restless. The next day, I went to work. And on my way home I looked to see if I might see Miss Maybelle. I dreaded it. Surely you can understand why. And so I breathed a sigh of relief when she was not there. But then my mind wandered, as minds are prone to do. What if something happened to her? What if the shadow was a demon?

I put those thoughts out of my head, dreadful as they were. I made it to the corner. No trouble there. Went home. Had dinner. A couple of drinks. Went to bed. The next day, I went to work. And on my way home I looked to see if I might see Miss Maybelle. I did. I tipped my hat and said, “Good day.” And she waved.

And I stopped. My heart quaked with fear, and she did not seem to notice, carrying on with her walk. I stared for several moments, rudely, before hurrying away. I arrived at the corner but did not care. Fear would not stop me. I hurried until I arrived at home. I was sick. I did not eat dinner. I went straight for a drink. I had two. No, three. Maybe four? And then, bed. Restless dreams haunted me.

The next day, I went to work. And on my way home, I dreaded seeing Miss Maybelle. And my heart sank when I did. I did not tip my hat to her. I did not say good day. But out of the corner of my eye I watched. And she smiled at me and waved. It was so dreadful that I took off running immediately.

I went home. I did not eat. I did not drink. I sat and I watched the hours go by. I dared not even to sleep. And the next day, I refused to go out. But as the hours went on, I could not help but feel exhaustion truly settling into my bones. I decided that I would endeavor to rest. But when I entered my room, I saw the silhouette – the shadow – of Miss Maybelle. It waved at me. I cried out with a start and fled from my home.

As I wandered blindly through the streets of town, I came upon Miss Maybelle, who was enjoying her afternoon walk. I ‘bout fainted. But she saw me before I could, and before I could dart away. And when she did, she nodded at me. Just a nod. And then, continued with her walk. No shadow behind her.
