Inhale,
I can taste the apprehension on my tongue,
swirling in my mouth; it's bitter, with a hint of hope that is
somehow brightened with your smile.
Exhale,
I can see my reflection in your eyes,
bittersweet, uninteresting; it's unnerving,
really, to see the image but not hear the thoughts,
But I am calmed by your words.
Holding my breath,
I can feel my emotions suspended in the air,
and I see now; it really is electric, enough to burn my skin
if I could bear to touch it.
Breathing around you,
I can hear my heart pound, an uneven
rhythm; jagged, just as my thoughts, with a hint
of a smile that is somehow amused by your modesty.
Breathing around you,
I can smell the harsh scent of cigarettes hanging
in the air; it's rough, with a hint of innocence that somehow seems
too perfect for us to hold onto.
