It beckons, it whispers, it waves and it cries,
Hides mysteries and secrets and provides a disguise
For lost creatures, lost hope, the weak and the meek,
Spark’ling in sunlight, dark in weather bleak.
Skin pearly white, body small, lithe and thin,
She was not human but of mythical kin,
Hair like the moon and eyes like the sea,
At home in the ocean, where she could be free.
Steps light as mist, she rose from the water,
Shedding sealskin soft and brown like myrrh,
A smile played across thin curving lips,
From her long tangled hair came water in drips.
She opened her mouth in silent wind song,
And sang of things once here, now gone;
And I, captivated by wordless rhythm,
To my great surprise, began to hum:
We two sang of land and sea,
Of things no more and things to be;
Of love and hate and toil and play,
Of light and dark and night and day;
Of human and creature, of life and fate,
Of longing and leaving, and a seven-year wait.
It beckoned, it whispered, it waved and it cried,
The sea called her back without saying goodbye;
A last smile before into sealskin she crept,
The waters blanketing tears that she wept.
Gone she is, without a trace,
With nothing but remembered face
To keep in mind when I forget to believe –
That I, long ago, fell in love with sea.
