Chapter 1
I have always been very interested in the asian culture. It is very intriguing to a person such as myself. So naturally, one day, I just happened to stumble across a place called Cyworld. I was reading about Korean celebrities when I saw that one who had passed away had an account on a social networking site. This, of course, was in the Korean language, so I had no idea what it was. It turns out that Cyworld, the networking site I had found, was like Korea's Myspace! So, being me, I had to join. To my dismay in research, it seemed that I had to have an ID to sign up so they could prove my ethnicity. I couldn't read the language anyway. After many days of searching for possible ways to join this website, I found that there was a Cyworld for the US. It wasn't as great, but it was close enough. And with that, I joined.
I met many interesting people on Cyworld. Koreans who wanted to perfect the English language, americans such as I who were also interested in the amazing culture of Korea...what a place!
Soon after quite a few weeks, maybe even a month later, I had met KayzOR. He was new to the website, and we talked for many days after I had welcomed him. We became good friends. One night, he sent me a profile message telling me about a place called Asian Unity. He told me that it was a better website to join than Cyworld. I questioned him "What if they don't like me? I won't fit in...I'm not asian." He then laughed and told me not to worry, that there were as many americans as there were here. I couldn't refuse, so I decided to join.
Of course, this was before Cyworld shut down.
Chapter 2
Maybe about a week or so after I had joined Cyworld, a little bit before I formally introduced myself to Kay, I had discovered porn spammers on Cyworld. The "Talk" section, which happened to be a forum, had been flooded with dirty and suggestive images on literally every post. They would always type vulgar language or say "CYWORLD IS DEAD!!!" It was then that I realized there were no moderators for this site. The spam continued for several months, where I finally decided that Cyworld seemed crude and unnatural...it was becoming a place I no longer recognized. I moved to Asian Unity, hardly checking up on the "terrorism" on Cyworld. Asian Unity had moderators, and a forum also. In fact, the very first day I was there I had 10 updates welcoming me to the website from other members! I was interested and hung out on the forums. There was a post that caught my attention, but I had never dared to click it before. Bored and seeing that there were no interesting posts to my liking, I clicked it. The title of the post was "CYWORLD REFUGEES!"
I had thought this to be a mere joke, some sort of way of saying "I moved here from Cyworld," but it was...well, different than I had expected.
It turns out the porn spammers had become so horrible, that Cyworld had deleted the Talk section! No more amusing conversation for all of Cyworld to share, just the privacy of profile commenting. Joy.
This gave me more reasons to thank Kay for telling me about Asian Unity. Asian Unity was so much better, cleaner, and healthier in a way.
After a good, solid month, I had a message in my inbox from an old user I had befriended on Cyworld back when I had first joined. This made me just want to check up on the site a little bit. There was horrible news on the front page.
Cyworld was SHUTTING. DOWN.
Where would everyone go who didn't know about Asian Unity, AU? What would they do? There was a bunch of new members for AU, but the Cyworld news somewhat broke my heart. Rather pathetic that Cyworld would actually let the porn spammers defeat them. Well, we fought the good fight, I suppose.
I was really getting into AU at this point, and I began to get foolishly into somebody on AU, too...
