I walked my enormous Rottweiler down the sidewalk. His snuffling nose ran along the sidewalk. "You won't have a nose anymore if you keep doing that," I laughed.
But my laugh was cut short when I spotted a small mound lying several feet away. I walked cautiously over to see what it was.
"Oh," I gasped softly.
It was a little hummingbird, lying on its side dead.
Poor little bird, I thought sadly.
I finished up the walk with my dog, then ran inside to get some gloves and a trowel. I dashed back to the place where the hummingbird lay. I gently scooped up the small unmoving body. Part of its head was slightly smashed (Though thankfully there was no organs) but the other side was perfect. If I tilted the head at an angle, its iridiscent pink head turned purple. Returning to the house, I stabbed the compact ground with a trowel, the little hummingbird next to me on the grass. "There," I said when I dug a decent hole. "You can be next to Tulip." Tulip was my pet hamster. I placed the little body in the hole. Even in death, it was still beautiful. Closing my eyes, I placed the dirt and filled the grave. Then I found a suitable rock and painted the words Here lies a Hummingbird.

- I think it's very well done! And, at Beth Turner's comment, I think stabbed is a perfectly good verb for the context, and I can't say it felt threatening in any way. Keep up the good work! You should try fiction sometime.

- Nice story, bad choice of the word "Stabbed" though- you had me worried for a second. "Dug my trowel into the compact ground" is less... threatening.
