He writes on a piece of parchment, ""I am sorry." He looks around his home one last time before stepping outside, and never returning. Drawings that his children made, a pie that has just been cooked by his wife. He leaves it all, by taking those few steps out the door.
The dock is empty, he can only see his boat. The fog is thick around him as he gets the sails ready.
She comes back from the market with some spices in her hand. The children are at their grandparents for the evening, and it is only to be her and her husband. She sets the spices on the table, and washes her hands. She turns, and sees the note on the table. And she hurries out the door.
He can feel the breeze running through his hair, and around his body. He doesn't look behind him to his home, he doesn't want to, for he might turn around and go back. This is the right decision, they deserve better. The for envelopes the ship and he continues to sail.
She finally gets to the dock. His ship is gone, and so is he. She screams his name out to the vast fog, hoping he is close enough to hear. She yells over and over again until her voice gives out.
He hears a faint cry in the fog. He can't quite make it out but it sounds familiar to him. Another cry loud and clear. His wife, screaming his name, and saying "Don't leave me, I love you." He realizes his mistake, but he can't find his way out from the fog. He's forever lost at sea.
