The summer sun shone bright and hot that Monday morning. Katherine Darren wiped sweat off her brow and grabbed a couple of suitcases from the back of the U-Haul moving van parked in the narrow driveway of their new home. She sighed as she made her way up the stone path that led to the open front door. Inside shoe could see her mother putting dishes into the cabinets in the kitchen at the end of the hall, near the back door. "Be careful, Katie! Those suitcases are heavy!" She said as she spotted her daughter struggling up the four stony steps that led up to the wraparound porch. Katie ignored her mother's warning and went right ahead with what she was doing. Cool air from the air conditioning hit her body and goose bumps awakened from their slumber. Katie shivered with relief. It was about 70 degrees here in Massachusetts, and after the agonizingly long winter they had had, it was heaven.
She set the two bags near one end of the couch and straightened. She leaned up against the edge of the wall and allowed her breath to catch up before she went and got herself a glass of cool water. After a few minutes, she stepped away from the wall and headed into the kitchen, where her mother was already opening another box of utensils and such. She looked up. "The cups are in the cabnet. next to the fridge." Her mother, whose name was Shelley, gestured towards the pantry.
Kate nodded and headed there. Just as she did so, she noticed something strange out of the window of the pantry. She knelt down and peered through the window. A man stood in the backyard, a few feet in front of the garage. He wore a dark blue shirt with black jeans. His hair was untidy, his eyes were a bright seagreen. But the most intriguing, and frightening part of him was his body. Kate nearly screamed aloud when she realized she could see through the strange man's body.
