Purple skies and grey grass. I was sitting in the middle of a grassy field that ran as far as the eyes can see. The feeling of pain clung in my heart, and tears ran down my face. But why am I crying? I don’t know…I don’t know. Everything was dim and strange looking. I stared at the sun—is that really a sun? Sun’s are bright, yes, that’s what this sun looks like, but is it supposed to have a warm shine to it? I feel only cold air sting my skin. The sun doesn’t have rays like what I remember. This one has smooth, round curves and its blinding white.
I stare too long at the sun and blink. When my eyes open again, the grassy field is smaller. From my body, the field is one foot in every direction. What lies beyond that range is just the emptiness of a black pit. When I looked over the edge, I cry more. Am I scared? Am I sad? Please, someone, please tell me why I feel like this, why my heart aches with agony and desperation. I find myself staring into the horizon again. Am I waiting for someone?
“Wake up, wake up! Time to do some chores around the house” Bouma bellows, her loud voice made my ears pop and eyes swing open. It was just a dream.
I looked around the room all confused, but then got angry. “I’m here again” my tone was cold and uncaring. It always is.
“Hush, girl” Bouma says to me. Before I could reply, she shouts to everyone, “Hurry, up, up, up!” she claps her huge hands three times. “Or else no breakfast—” everybody screams and runs out the door, down the stairs, and into the kitchen. Everyone but me.
“Not hungry” I crossed my arms.
“Mhmm, sure” she turns and before she shuts the door, she says, “I understand the other kids being rebellious, but they’re more cooperative than you are. Just because you’re the oldest doesn’t mean—”
“I could do everything I want, blah, blah, blah” I said mockingly. “Can you go now?”
She sighs. “Listen girl, you’re only twelve—”
“Turning thirteen—”
“In five months” Bouma gulps down on a chuckle. We just kept interrupting each other, and she understood me more than anyone else in the orphan house. “You’ve got an attitude problem and if you want to leave this orphanage, than at least pretend to be nice” she gave me reassuring smile. “I feel for you more than the other ten kids” then she closes the door shut, leaving me inside the room alone.
I walk back and forth, and then fell flat on my bed. Well, it wasn’t really a bed, just piles of blankets on the floor, and a pillow. Thoughts ran through my head like a bomb. Images of the dream I had keeps flooding in. I’ve dreamt it a bunch of times, but in my dream, I never notice a thing. Not until I wake up that is. I wish I knew what it meant.
My thoughts trailed off to the orphanage. I’ve been here for as long as I remember, and Bouma told me that I’ve been here since I was one years old. No one knows who my parents really are.
Uh, I don’t know how to do this…hey, Mich! Am I doing this right?
I blinked and sat up. What was that? There was a voice in my head…it wasn’t my voice at all! It was a boy’s voice. But a boy’s voice in my mind is just crazy. I must be imagining things, yeah, that’s it. I’m just a little tired is all.
Ehh? What—I’m on right now?! The voice says again.
“Ooookay now that’s just creepy!” I yell as I squirm up off my bed. It looked like I was fighting off a hairy spider that I found crawling over my body. “Ew, ew, ew!” my hand brushed away imaginary diseases off my body.
Today is your lucky day! His voice said cheerfully. You’ve just won a trip to—oh, what? N—no I’m not! It doesn’t sound like that. Eh? Oops! I didn’t know that you had to—huh? No I don’t think he…or she heard…
“Oh, what in the world?” I was less scared and more confused. The boy, the voice, sounded like he was having a conversation with someone else while trying to talk to me at the same time. Wait, is he talking to me or am I just hallucinating? Maybe I am because he sounded like he was trying to sell me something, like in the advertisement. This is just plain weird.
Sorry. He sounded apologetic, then changed back to his happy self. This may sound strange to you, and maybe a bit crazy, but you’re going to leave your home for a very long time—well, forever actually.
I gaped. “I’m going somewhere? But I…how…I…am only twelve…I…” I don’t even know what I’m saying anymore. The voice is crazy, but right now I’m going along with it. It sounded like a dream come true, to leave this orphanage.
Well, you ready to go? He asks.
“Now?!” I was shocked. Leaving now was sooner than I expected. It gave me a headache. “What the heck am I saying…? I gotta stop talking to myself” but a part of me told the negative side to shut up and just go.
Here we go!
Instant static. It filled my ears and fuzzed up my brain, a really strange feeling. My heart was beating faster and I could see patches of white lights multiplying right in front of my eyes. It was as if it ate up bits and pieces of the room till nothing but white showed. I’m really going somewhere, I really am! I screamed in my mind. This felt so real, so amazing. I could hear shouting somewhere—it sounded like kids and…Bouma! But where are they shouting? I cant see, and it sounded so far away. “I’m leaving, I’m going now!” it was meant only for Bouma and I wasn’t so sure she could hear me. “Bye! I’ll be safe, I promise—”
What? The voice interrupts me. I wasn’t supposed to send her here yet? Uh oh, but—what? I did it wrong?! Oh shoot oh shoot oh shoot…
What did he do wrong? He did something wrong?! “Stupid idiot!” I scream, hoping he could hear my roar. I guess I’m not going to be so safe after all.
A flash was all it took. It made my eyes go blank and body unmovable. It felt like I was just a voice in a mind. Then another flash which changed everything again. I found myself in the air above the clouds, and I was falling. I dived like a bullet, eyes watering. I would flail my arms and kick my legs but I still couldn’t move a damn muscle.
“There he is, there—no, it’s a she! There she is, she’s up there!” I heard somebody shout. My body fell so fast that I was only a few miles away from solid ground. Specks of people were standing on grass. How many were there, about ten?
More panicked shouting. “Do something, Lenschi!” another screams.
“I’m trying, I—” a boy’s voice said before he was interrupted by the same girl who spoke before.
“Try FASTER!” she barks.
Then everything happened like multiple snapshots. I was a mere mile away, staring to my doom. The ten people were yelling their lungs out, looking up at me. A boy with dark blond hair didn’t look as freaked as the others but he wasn’t so calm either. His arms went up in the air, his purple eyes glistening.
Is he trying to catch me? I think to myself. He must be stupid. In fact, this whole thing was stupid. Or just a dream. I closed my eyes. This could be a dream within a dream. I’ve had those before and I hate ‘em. I’ll just wait for Bouma to wake me up like she always does.
But this wasn’t like the dreams and she’s not going to wake me up at all. This is all real. It was a horrible truth, the worst thing I could imagine. This whole thing doesn’t even seem realistic. First the mind talking, the flashing light, and now this?
Four seconds to touching the ground; three, two, one—I crashed into the dark blond guy’s arms. I expected him to break in half but he doesn’t budge, doesn’t bend. His arms wrapped around me tight. Then the ground crackled and dented beneath us. The green grass that used to be there was now a hole of dirt and rocks. He seems so inhuman!
“Phew, that was a close one!” he says, and grins at me. “Hi. My name’s Lenschi”
I gawk at him. I couldn’t feel anything outside, so I couldn’t tell if it was warm or cold and I certainly couldn’t feel Lenschi’s skin against mine; his icky, icky boy skin. “Why do you sound so happy?” I hissed.
“Cause no one got hurt! Man I thought I messed up though” he laughed. The other people came crowding around us, staring at me.
“Is this her?” they asked.
This? I grumbled, “I am not an object” then, to Lenschi, I said, “Get your hands of me”
“You crazy?” Lenschi says in a tone I really hated. “This isn’t the world you know of anymore. Plus, you can’t move your body, can you?”
I can’t take this anymore. This is not what I wanted! I looked around to see where I was and see wide plains and some trees. It's really sunny and the sky is...light blue-ish purple? Between the two colors are two moons. The one on the purple side was two times bigger though. The sun was all the way on the other side of the moons.
"I don't like this" I said silently to myself as Lenschi began walking.

- Well well well Bud! Very well written...Although I will admit that it was a bit fast, and a bit confusing. It reminds me of one of my favorite series, Molly Moon!
