• New Year’s Surprise

    Snow was gently falling as Tohru stared out the window watching the sunset. She opened the window with a gentle push and the chilled air brushed her face. She smiled and looked behind her to see what time it was, but she knew Kyo wouldn’t be home for awhile due to work.

    It had been two years since they had been living together and yet not once had they spent New Year’s together.

    “I guess it can’t be helped,” she smiled sadly while closing the window. Kyo always worked overtime during this time.

    Did he not want to greet the new year with her?

    A tiny tear rolled down her cheek. She was always with Kyo, but why did she feel so distance from him still? Why did his words affect her so much to the point of joy or sadness?

    “N-no, of course Kyo-kun is doing his best! How can I be so selfish,” she wiped her tears away and slapped her face to give herself determination.

    “I know! I’ll go out and built a snowman that will shock and amaze Kyo-kun,then maybe,” she smiled to herself,” I can see his smile again…”

    Tohru grabbed her jacket and boots, heading for the front door. She stepped into the snow and looked up at the sky,” Mom, please make it snow a lot. I need your help to make a snowman.”

    As if her wish had been heard the snow continued to fall around her. She headed for the backyard to get a bucket and shovel to help make a big snowman when she noticed footprints leading into the backyard.

    “Oh! I bet Hana-chan or Uo-chan came to visit,” she followed the footsteps and came across a tiny bump in the distance. She bent down to have a closer look and saw that it was a tiny snow cat.

    “How cute!” Tohru was delighted at the sight, noticing a pink ribbon with a little silver bell around its neck.

    “Tohru.”

    She jumped in surprise at the voice and turned around,”K-Kyo-kun!”

    Embarrassed, she pointed to the snow cat,” Look, Kyo-kun! It’s just like you.”

    He seemed on edge,” Let’s go in. It’s as cold as hell out here.”

    He suddenly turned around and headed toward the house. Tohru was stunned at his actions. What was wrong?

    “O-okay, I’ll be right there,” she bent down to grab the pink ribbon because she had grown fond of it. The bell jingled in her hand and Kyo whipped around, a blush painting his face,” What are you doing?!”

    “I-I thought the ribbon would make a cute necklace,” shocked by his actions the ribbon slowly slide from her hand causing the bell to slide off.

    “Don’t!” Kyo reached out his hand to grab it, but she caught the bell instead.

    The bottom of the bell came off and she stared at her hand. She looked up at him with wide eyes, but he turned away with a blush, his frown still in place.

    “K-Kyo-kun,” she smiled as a few tears fell onto the soft snow.

    A silver ring sat in her hand.

    Kyo stated in his stubborn manner,” You don’t have to, uh, accept it, you know.”

    She smiled,” I love it, Kyo-kun. Thank you.”

    He looked down at her and gave a smile of relief and she smiled back, tears of joy filling her eyes. How she had missed that smile.

    “What kind of proposal was that?!”

    “Indeed, quite unromantic.”

    Uo and Hana came out from behind the bushes along with Yuki.

    “Only an idiot would go and do something as stupid as to leave a ring outside,” Yuki brushed the snow off his jacket while Kyo fumed.

    “I’m gonna kill you all!” The blush on his face took away the threatening effect causing the three of them to laugh.

    “Hana-chan! Uo-chan! Yuki-kun!” Tohru greeted them happily.

    “Hey, let’s go eat!” Uo stomped happily toward the house making Yuki sigh and shake his head.

    “I agree,” Hana glided across the snow with Yuki following her realizing how cold it was getting.

    “Who the hell do you think you guys are?!”

    Tohru watched them go inside and looked down at the snow cat. She smiled.

    Her wish really did come true.

    “Thank you for bringing Kyo-kun home, Snowcat-san.”
