- A smudge of orange stands out against the pure white snow padding the ground. You move your hand to keep the flakes from your eyes and try to get a better look. It is still impossible to tell what it is. The snow virtually silences your footsteps as you pad off the path to get a better look. As you approach it begins to take shape and you realize that you have been unknowingly stalking a wolf. Your body goes rigid. As you stand motionless, you watch the creature. It is not moving either. Sitting on its haunches, its maw faces skyward. Her green eyes are squinted nearly shut in an attempt to keep out the flakes of snow as it stares at the sky. You can see its pupils darting rapidly, watching nearly each flake fall. You can tell she has been there for a while. The snow was piled nearly a fourth of a foot on her back and tail. Without moving your head, you look at the ground. The same amount of snow has piled onto the grass and trees. She must have been sitting in the same spot since the snowfall started. Suddenly a snowflake falls on her eye nose. Her eyes cross looking at it. No longer looking at the sky, she sees you from the corner of her eye. Her eyes pop open wide and she stands up; the snow falls from her shoulders and back. Once again you both stand rigid. A few minutes pass and you finally give up your resisting and blink. The seconds your eyelids close you hear several twigs and branches break, growing fainter by the millisecond. Opening your eyes, you find yourself alone in the clearing. You shrug and trudge back to the trail.
